Re: Thinking of finally upgrading: LGA 1155 for about $1000
Thanks for the reply! The Seasonic would be the safest bet since it has been reviewed here at SPCR. You can't be sure that the Rosewill be quiet enough, unlike the Seasonic. True! Good thought. If I want to save money, I could always go for a M12II, I guess. There's a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO, the...

Thinking of finally upgrading: LGA 1155 for about $1000
Would anyone care to give this parts list a once-over? http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=24432647 Some concerns, in no particular order: I'm awfully torn about that gigabyte board, and not just because of the tacky branding. Asus' UEFI and software tools in gener...

I think Lawrence is correct in calling the phenomena as intermodulation; beat frequencies are a specific instance of the more general concept.b_rubenstein wrote:This is known as a beat tone http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beat_%28acoustics%29

It's possible you got that result because your master file table (or what have you) isn't on the R: partition. Someone should try with a spare drive. EDIT: Hmm, maybe I'm being silly. Why would Format do something to devices/physical drives that it wouldn't do to partitions/logical drives? We may ha...

"Hot-plugging" fans to a power supply connector
It doesn't feel like a particularly good idea, but I can't think of a reason why plugging in (or unplugging) a fan would be any worse (or better) for the power supply than a hot-swappable drive.
Thoughts?

I did a little bit of resistor math in this thread . All that's required is reading the fan's label and doing some algebra. That said, I'd recommend doing what others in this thread have recommended: re-wiring your fan to draw 5 volts directly from your power supply. Use the diagrams from this SPCR ...

I support everything andyb has said in this thread. I offer Comodo's free firewall as an alternative to PC Tools', and suggest the use of a-squared Free 3.5 in addition to a regimen of Spybot Search and Destroy's and Ad-Aware's on-demand (not background) scanners.

It's common for recorded US TV shows to be reduced from 29.97Hz to 23.97Hz. Well, actually it should be exactly 2/3rds of 29.97Hz, or 23.97333 recurring Hz, but everyone seems to use 23.97Hz exactly. This causes big problems, especially on 100Hz TVs. Ideally every third frame exactly should be drop...

The word on the street is to use Deino. Googling "folding deino" brings up two relevant threads on the folding forums right at the top of the list. This is the better of the two.

Out of curiosity, any love for Avira out there?
I've used Avira, Avast, and AVG in the past, and I currently have AVG on the computers that aren't protected with NOD32, but it may be time to re-evaluate things.

Great! I hope the Xigmatek works out great. It's interesting to see that the Q6600 is still the best value when it comes to an Intel quad-core. I'd recommend Vegas over Pinnacle. I mentioned it because RGone has a history of mistrusting Seasonic S12s. He could very well be right, but in my very, very limited experience (one DFI board (a Lanparty UT NF4 SLI-DR) and one old-school Seasonic S12 500W), the power supply was up to the task.kittle wrote:interesting on the power supply too...
