Re: HP MicroServer

Sure but the sane ones have a relationship with some kind of professional to overlook servers and the like. Outsourcing is not uncommon around here. Small IT service companies provide the services many business needs without the risk involved in relying on a clueless guy. Many of the outsourcing co...

Which three-platter 2TB for raid?

I've been looking into the Samsung F4EG 2TB, versus the newer 3-platter WD20EARS. My current inclination is to go with the latter for my new 5x2 raid set. Drives will be used with linux software-raid5. I've currently got a set of 4 WD10AAKSes, and these work fine. I have not had issues with them dro...

You might want to look into aligning your partitions properly. The EARS is a 4 kB sectors drive, and WinXP does not by default partition properly for that. With 4 kB read/write, that would lead just about to a halving of the speed plus some overhead, as each 4 kB read or write would require 8 kB of ...

I suspect the biggest difference is in the warranty arrangements. ie, the OEM drives don't have any through WD themselves.

I recently purchased a quartet of WD10EACS in .nl and was quite chuffed to find out they actually were the newer 3-platter model. Originally ordered July 9, and they were reported as in stock (but the order was waiting on another component (an AOC-SAT2-MV8) with unknown time) by 22/7. They were ship...

Can I ask where you found that these are MLC products rather than SLC? OCZ itself doesn't specify, and their earlier product, with similar but slightly less performance, was pronounced to be SLC by the review sites.

P5Q is a P45 mainboard, which means Intel Matrix Raid. This is a 'fakeraid', which means that the mirroring is done in software by the BIOS on boot and by the driver during running of windows. You set it up initially in the BIOS, then load the device driver (if necessary) during the install (will be...

It would be handy if there were some way to record all the reads and writes over a session in Windows and replay them, so that a card could be artificially aged to determine realistic lifespan. I suppose a simpler alternative would be to just record the average number and size of read/writes in a W...

Most of the black/blue/green drives appear to be rebadged versions of the current drives, same type number (WD6400AAKS-xxxxxx frex, down to the xes), simply with a new product name because they're dividng into green, black (performance), and blue (basic reliability).

375GB [platters] So that means (along with the power distributions) that we're getting 2-platter 750s now. Using this technology, it would also be trivial for Hitachi to bring out a 4-platter 1500 gigabyte drive. Is there really that little demand for drives larger than a terabyte that even a simpl...

Hmm, yes, if you look closely you can see it's just a little to the left of where the 16x slot starts (which a 1x slot wouldn't be). AFAIK AMR has always been mostly an OEM-only thing, particularly to very cheaply add modems and stuff. In the old days, AMR was a very short AGP-style connector (about...

In S3 sleep mode, the PSU fan turns off, at least it does on the systems I've built that do S3 (SU380 x2 and neoHE 430). My system with the corsair 520 doesn't really do 'off', in any variant, so I've never tried that one, but I suspect that it, too, would completely shut down the fan in S3. And wit...

It might be possible with a standard ATX PSU if you take it out of its casing aswell or if you remove/grind down the decorative bolts on the heatpipes of the Minja. You can simulate a network card in vmware, but if you don't have drivers for the real one, the simulated one isn't going to transfer data to your real network ;) Yes, but it's the Host OS that needs the drivers, not the guest OS. My 120mm Yate Loons described above were as your smaller Nexus ( 3 fan wires straight to 3-pin, red & black back out to 4-pins ), so it's a case of dealing with the situation you find. ;) Odd, that, since YL manufactures the Nexus 120 I believe. Personally, I don't isolate cut ends explicitly. On the 80 and 92 nexus, the 3 wires from the fan first go into a 3pin and then two of them continue on to the molex passthrough. Just use a small scissors to snip them right where the stock heatshrink ends on the 3pin. Those cut ends sure aren't going...

Indeed. Hard drives that old significantly increase the risk of losing all your data, which is major pain even if you *do* have proper backups. In addition the parallel ata cables are a major pain airflow-wise, especially when it's more than one. There's also no way that 3x 40GB Cuda IVs are quieter...
