Thanks for the reply - so the switch from 32-bit to 64-bit won't pose a problem, then? Presumably, if I then upgrade to 64-bit version of XP, I'll see a bit of a speed bump.

processor upgrade

Not so much a silent question but more a general query regarding CPUs - Been out of the tinkering game for some time and have become much more of a user than a tweaker :-) I'm running a sempron 3200 just now with XP Pro. I was thinking of upgrading to an Athlon X2 64 but was wondering, will my exist...

Pixel_pimp, Is the "Octomac" dual quad cores? What is your clock rate? I was just wondering if it is dual Q6600's why you could not go way over 4000PPD. The verdict is in - 3464 points yesterday I have noticed, that although most applications were fine, Dreamweaver did not seem happy about running ...

After reading discussions on here about cost per point, I'm going to stop leaving the sempron running all day but have got a second instance of FAH running on the MacPro so I guess I should still see an upturn in production. Will probably reinstate the home machine once it's upgraded to multicore an...

Hmm - looks like Apple, in their wisdom, have used a wacky PSU design. Which costs £145 to replace with no assurance of less noise  This is bad news as it looks like that's the prime noise source as it has two 40mm fans in it which would tie up with the high pitched tinny sound it's making. ...

Shutting up a Dual G4

I've just started working in an office with many very noisy machines. Some I probably won't be allowed to get my hands on (an x-serve, the UPS systems etc) but there are a couple that I at least have a chance of shutting the hell up - principally a Dual G4 that makes a really intrusive ringy noise. ...

Does an onboard GPU use up electricity just by virtue of it's presence on the board? If the machine could be set up remotely from some other machine through a kind of virtual display (I've seen a friend do this with his Macs but don't have experience of it myself) could there be an energy saving in ...

Folding machine

If you were to build a machine with the express purpose of folding in the home environment - ie can't take up a lot of space and should be efficient enough not to put your bills through the roof - how would you go about it? Is there a 'sweet spot' for balancing crunching power against electricity us...

If your application(s) work under both, mac and win, I'd prefer mac and OS X, especially for graphic design. Can you explain why? Nobody has ever given me a credible difference why a Mac is better suited to design work than a PC - the key software components are the same on both. I can understand t...

Hmmm - I'm not seeing any fanless options for the 1900 series so far. I'd rather have low to moderate performance and no fan to be honest. I don't really play games so I don't need top end performance there either - just feel that a boost over the onboard GFX plus the option to work through a few ex...

My current specs are listed in my sig so I won't relist. I'm looking ahead to getting back into the workplace shortly and this has made me think about possible upgrades to get me running a bit nippier. I use the machine for graphic design work including web development and feel it could be both bett...

Soon as my college course is over and I'm earning once again, I'll be upping my spec to an Athlon64 X2 and popping in a new GFX card so I'll be punting out a few extra WUs from then on (quietly, of course!). My friend has the client running in his labs under my ID as well - not sure what he's got it...

Looking for a small speed bump

As per my sig, I'm currently using onboard GFX (GF 6150) and, while it does the job, I wouldn't mind a small increase in GFX power (actually, I even struggle to play DVDs smoothly just now). I'm pretty much lost as to what chips come where in the pecking order and which ATI compares with which NVidi...
