Depends on whats running
Like the previous post, it depends on memory and software. I have a 1 G pentium 3 thinkpad with 512M of ram. Sometimes it will do youtube, etc. acceptably, and if it gets slow I can restart it. I run spybot s&d regularly and keep the software on it to a minimum. I had open office on it, but it liked...

New SMP linux client:
Today I had to shut down to do some wiring, and when I restartedit said the client was expired, so I downloaded the new one. I didn't know it now requires an option -smp if you want to run it as smp (sounds silly, but they are merging it into the regular client, so you can run it either regular or s...

Several computers on same wu
Angelkiller, "I'm looking for all of the computers to work on the same WU. Possible? Any ideas? (Computers are two 1GHz P3's, 1.7GHz P4, 2.6GHz Celeron, and possibly an Athlon 64 3200+.)" Probably not easy, but might be doable with smp workunits. They result in 4 processes. In theory you ought to be...

pputer, For me, the practical way to set up a network depends on how I'm connected to the internet. When I used modems that provided a single interface to me (first a modem card in my computer, then a cable modem with a single ethernet connection) I used my linux box with either the telephone modem ...

I did control-c to stop the folding processes, renamed the directory with the folding executable and data, made a new folding directory, opened the archive in it, and ran the executable. It got a different work unit, which finished today without problems. Must have been a bad work unit. I had done a...

My last two work units terminated with similar errors at 67%. Here's what I copied from the terminal: [13:06:32] Writing local files [13:06:33] Completed 335000 out of 500000 steps (67 percent) [0]0:Return code = 0, signaled with Segmentation fault [0]1:Return code = 0, signaled with Segmentation fa...

Branko, Your room must have some vent that's putting out cold air. Why don't you get a piece of cardboard that can cover it, and a roll of duct tape to hold it in place. Or sometimes vent covers easily unscrew. Then you cut cardboard to fit behind it and screw it back on. A lot safer than running a ...

What you say makes some sense, but unfortunately TDP isn't normally the power dissipation that would occur when the cpu is at 100%. AMD processors generally would never reach the advertised tdp unless you overclock and/or overvolt. Intel processors might exceed their TDP before 100% load. I think th...

I agree. The scratch area is so small it won't matter, unless they are deep scratches with raised ridges at their sides. If they really worry you, I would say get a sheet of 400 or maybe even 600 wet or dry sandpaper, put it on a smooth surface, like glass, hold the heat sink near the bottom so it s...

I agree with the mATX motherboard with integrated graphics and the dual core processor, but if you want to do smp, 512M might be a little tight. I have 2G, and the most total memory I have seen used by the 4 folding processes was about 16.5%, or about 338 MB. On board video will use some (my MSI k9v...

Computers are for doing stuff
A lot of your suggestions make sense, but I have to disagree with this one: - Reduce system load: Idle system produce less noise. Seti@home, folding, prime95 must go. Sure, don't load down your computer doing things without purpose, but what is worth doing? To me folding is very worth doing. It may ...

motherboard with two ata channels
If you want to keep your ide drives, the MSI k9vgm-v has 2 channels, and everything, including video and audio, works with Ubuntu 7.04. It has a passively cooled via chipset, and the northbridge feels just slightly warm to the touch. I need to figure out how to monitor temperatures in Linux.

folding memory usage with smp
I'm doing smp on 64-bit linux, and have 2 G of ram. One time the total ram usage of the four folding processes was 16.5%, which would be 330M (I guess it's a little more than that, I'm treating the numbers as decimal). My 2 G is probably overkill, but 1 G might not be, unless you use the machine onl...

more fans or less fans
Fewer fans at higher speed are generally louder than more fans at lower speed. Of course it depends a lot on which fans you use, too. Whether the psu fan should have its own cool air or be used to ventilate the case may depend on how much heat the computer generates. With older cpu's that create mor...

Everybody else talked about the advantages of dual channel, but 512 MB of ram isn't a lot in these days of multimedia. I think you will notice an improvement just due to the increase in ram, especially if you tend to have several programs going at once. Should be a worthwhile upgrade at today's ram ...

You shouldn't see any difference in performance for your application between the two systems. If the difference in computing power concerns you, you could substitute a 65 nm athlon x2 for the sempron, (and use it for folding@home when you aren't doing audio streaming) and still save a few francs, or...

Hi Folders, I became aware of folding via the forum post on spcr being passed by a Russian team, and started out on my old duron applebred, using the name silent_applebred. I think I did 2 work units before I got the stuff to upgrade (not just for folding, but that gave me one more excuse. ) Recycli...

I just did an upgrade to am2 with an msi k9vgm-v motherboard. It is passively cooled, and has on-board video. New Egg has it "open box" (but I think it's OEM, not a return) for $34.99. It needed jumpers for the audio, and I had to correct the memory setting in bios, but then it installled 64 bit ubu...

Your cpu choice happens to be the same as mine (on order, not yet received) and I'm going to cool it with an Arctic Cooling alpine64 92mm. I used the same on a Athlon 4000+ system I built about a month ago, and besides being cheap, it is quiet and sufficient for these processors that don't dissipate...

Seasonic S12 series
d00ku, I just got a seasonic s12-330, and I'm really pleased with it, it's by far the quietest supply in its power range I have dealt with. The seasonic s12's have a big 12 cm fan on top of the supply, but it sucks air into the psu, which is blown out the back. If I understand your arrangement, this...
