Cloneman, at least one AMD laptop has this problem. My two week old Compaq V3307AU whines like a *****. Interestingly though, it only does when I select "high performance". The low power modes actually eliminate the noise!

BTW, the power supply... Here in OZ, the 430w model (my initial choice), is pretty thin on the ground i.e about five stockists in the whole country! I was only able to get it online, and after delivery costs were factored in the price difference between it and the 550w was only $50AUD. That, plus th...

StonyC - Cheers :D Shaman - The front fan is to ensure air gets to the video card, as the GFX fan is disconected. The passive GFX heatsink.. I like it! SebRad -   I know. It really is quite dangerously underpowered. Maybe I'll upgrade to redundant hotswappable PSU's :mrgr...

A few months ago I built myself a firebreathing Core 2 Duo system. Flash forward to about three weeks ago and the realization struck me that I was only using it for web browsing! And so, "Tiny", was born... Sempron 2800+ S754 Asus K8V-VM 1Gb Samsung DDR400 7300GS (with fan power detached) Big Typhoo...

Aaargh! I can't believe I missed this. I just built a new computer less than two weeks ago with a Silverstone TJ08 + Seasonic S12 550w. Combined they cost $320AUD, and the 3400 is retailing for $135AUD.

In effort trying to get it out of the case without removing the CPU heatsink, I managed to deeply gash my hand on the inner workings of the case.
And so the great gods of silicon have been appeased. Verily, your sacrifice shall allow another year of trouble free operation, my son.

So I attacked the fan grilles today. They didn't stand a chance, mwahaha! http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k202/lloyd84/Image054.jpg I soft mounted both fans using cable ties, and also cut two pieces of foam to the same size as the fan frames to sit in between the fans and the case for extra isolat...

So far it's been flawless. The first time I booted I thought there was a problem because it started and stopped a couple of times. Turns out this is just a quirk of the DS3's design. The first time it boots it reads the voltages, and then resets. It will also do this most times you change an option ...

They are a lot better than the 7200.9's were, and now they are suspended the only thing they're vibrating is themselves. Noise wise the only thing I hear is extended seeks, which are fairly muted.

My First "Silent" Computer

This is not my first attempt at obtaining silent nirvana. I previously had an Athlon XP 2500+ (OC'ed to 3200+). Man was that thing loud. Four high speed 80mm fans mounted at the front, and one very loud, hot and generic power supply. (Let's not forget the stock HSF, either.) After having used that f...

Check out the Gigabyte 965P-DS3 if you are interested in undervolting. I am currently using one of these with BIOS F4, and it allows you to set the voltage all the way down to 0.51250! This is in 0.00625 steps too, so it's about as flexible as you can get.
