Re: Ninja SNCJ-1000 for socket 1155 with Noctua backplate, now (2020) on Ryzen AM4

Yeah, I don't think I'll ever sell it - not that it's now basically unsellable (is that a word?), but I want to keep coming back here, every several years, showing it chugging along on newer and newer sockets. When the time comes, the 1200 will be upgraded, probably to an 8c/16t and I'm betting it'l...

Re: Ninja SNCJ-1000 for socket 1155 with Noctua backplate, now (2020) on Ryzen AM4

Hello again! Last time the Ninja cooled my 2500K, some 2.5 years ago. That's when my LC itch got so strong I simply had to go full water. Long story short, some 3 months later my Z77 board gave up and in came Ryzen. Since I already had the LC, I simply got a new block and called it a day. Now, time ...

Re: Ninja SNCJ-1000 for socket 1155 with Noctua backplate -

I now have full LC in my system and sorry, not going to remove it any time soon (too much hassle, I hope you understand). I'm pretty sure though that you could put the hooks/eyes from the Ninja mounting set through the holes in any AMD board. But the thread in the backplate is unlikely to match the ...

Re: Ninja SNCJ-1000 for socket 1155 with Noctua backplate -

Well, I still have the Ninja & full box, and I actually do have a Ryzen now, but I didn't really bother to check the possibilities of fitting these two. Seriously tho, just looking at the mounting system, I can't think of an easy way to do it. The Ninja has a square layout (75 x 75 now) and the AM4 ...

Re: Will Ninja 4 lose performance over time?

In general - yes, quite likely. But I don't think it's the issue here - the heatsink is squeaky clean, it's regularly dusted; the fan is a fresh Glidestream - the original fan has been replaced long time ago, and then the replacement fan got replaced by the one I have now - again, a squeky clean, ve...

Re: What PSU for my SILENT build?

yeah that's true, still it's also true that the fan spins at 40% load, so if one could manage to stay under that % most of the time, this would be the quiter solution, would it not? Well, tl;dr = yes. But consider this: In RMx series the fan starts spinning @ 600 RPM and won't really ramp up quickl...

Re: What PSU for my SILENT build?

Corsair RM550x / 650 Gold - semi-fanless mode, you most likely won't ever hear the unit as it can work without fan up to around 300W; the 650W has more PCI-E connections if you really want SLI and more headroom (I have a 550W running a 2500K + 970 - never heard it myself, even with a heavily OCed sy...

Re: Will Ninja 4 lose performance over time?

At SPCR's recommendation, shortly after I joined the site, I bought SCNJ-1000, aka the one & only original, the iconic, the holy, errr, excuse me, I get carried away at times... Anyway, my '06 Ninja is now cooling a 2500K @ 4.4 GHz. Clocked at 4.6 GHz, the CPU proves to be a little too much for the ...

Re: Happy 10th Anniversary to Scythe SCNJ-1000 Ninja!

I can't answer it, honestly. I just didn't record the temps all along. The CPU now idles at around 34 C, with the fan at < 700 RPM and 21 C in my room. That said I don't think there was any degradation - the heatpipes are intact, the base is perhaps somewhat discolored from repeated use of various c...

Happy 10th Anniversary to Scythe SCNJ-1000 Ninja!

I've had this magnificent piece of hrdwr for exactly 10 years now. I remember I bought it sometime in spring '06, shortly before the second revision hit the stores - the guy even offered a small discount as he was making space for the new coolers. It barely fit in my case then, a generic Modecom som...

Re: looking for RPM readings of some GB GTX 960 cards

I chose EVGA GTX970 4GB ACX 2.0 SSC (04G-P4-3975-KR) - I guess I should be good with the noise :)

I'm just a little confused because the shop lists this as an ACX 2.0 cooler (middle), while EVGA's website says its a 2.0+ affair (right)

Well, we'll see tomorrow.

Re: looking for RPM readings of some GB GTX 960 cards

If I had gold for an aftermarket cooler, I'd rather spend it on an MSI Gaming or EVGA, really*. Years ago I had an Accelero S1 and I bet it would fare great with a lowly 960. But it's long gone now. * and this is what I'm actually going to do, I've already spent too much life obsessing on the very c...

Thanks guys. As I said, I know which 960s have fanless mode, and there are plenty of them - point is, they're almost as expensive (new ones, obiously) as second hand 970s. So it's all really about budget - for now I don't want to exceed it, simply. I'm hunting for the cheapest possible 960 4G (Abula...

But wouldn't such glue/putty solutions be actually only usable on "open" coils? AFAIK now they only use those neat, cube coils on VGAs. In PSUs I guess those "old" design coils are found. I never had to deal with squealing myself and only read about ppl putting glue on PSU coils, but I guess putting...

Re: Scythe Ninja 4: A Legend Reborn

As for the support for 1155 (and the like) - the first Ninja can actually be used. See here - there's plenty of ways to make it work, all easy and cheap. As for the Plus version - you'd perhaps need some more aftermarket elements, making this a not so cost effective solution anymore. The very concep...

Re: Scythe Ninja 4: A Legend Reborn

Perhaps go for the one with best clearance over RAM modules if you have some fance sticks with tall heatsinks (useless, but it's not the point now). Or maybe go for the one with the best sounding fan? Ninja, Kotetsu and Mugen Max seem to have - at 11 db - very similar performance, with 40-43 C rise....

As a massive fan of the original, it warms my heart to see Scythe on top again with the new Ninja :) My thoughts exactly! And add to that 3 other Scythes in top 10. The original Ninja still chugs along on a sligthly OCed I5 2400 in my main rig, coupled with a SlipStream. I got the cooler just befor...

Also, with R5 I will not be able to install Kaze Station 3,5" as its knobs protr...

dano777, the bar (that I cut into separate eyes) is exclusive to the first version of Ninja, to Ninja Cu and also, I guess, it's used in Orochi; even if you can get the bar I'm not sure if there'll be a way to use it with your version
