Re: Radeon HD 6xxx
They compare very closely in benchmarks. The 6870 is slightly faster, but uses more power. That is something *you* can verify by checking reviews. ( * ) Perhaps you have to check your post (and rip off the () around the quoted URL, maybe). However, just to confirm the performance difference is very...

Re: Radeon HD 6xxx
That really doesn't have anything to do with what I asked. Yes, better cooler will help, but that goes for both the 5850 and 6870.My question has nothing to do with coolers, I am talking about a fundamental property of the chip. I already wrote about the performance per watt of the new GPU. The new...

Re: Radeon HD 6xxx
The 6870 sits between the 5870 and 5850, so it actually performs better than the 5850. The edge is there but slight, and according to most reviews goes hand in hand with an increase in power used. They are quite comparable. But how can you possibly think it is relevant to say " die shrinks actually...

Re: Radeon HD 6xxx
I had been interested in a 5850. Now the 6870 is out, and has about the same performance, with the same power draw. Yet in most of the tests I have seen it runs louder and hotter. So correct me if I am wrong on this: given two cards with the same power draw, the one with the smaller die size will ru...

Finally no push pins, they fixed the major flaw in all Ninja coolers. Now they might actually be able to compete with the True,HR-01 +,Noctua,Megahalems. Pushes pins was one the reason I would never touch a Scythe Ninja. my old Ninja had a backplate. When they got rid of them I went with an HR-01 f...

Crude oil ? I live in Quebec, 95% hydro-électricity so it's " clean " for the environment. And if you weren't using it all, some of it could be exported, so someone else wouldn't have to use as much crude oil. "Clean" power is a very limited resource. The more of it you use, the more crude oil is ...

LH has a pretty good rant about the state of non-nVidia graphics on Linux . Don't be too put off by the name, he's pretty spot on. Of course, I feel like gaming on Linux is in a worse state than it was a few years ago even, so you're probably fine going with ATI and dual booting so you can game in W...

Gigabyte and ASUS usually stay pretty mainstream in terms of card design...usually just rebranded reference designs. Uh, no, wrong. Gigabyte is known for interesting/innovative/effective No kidding. Here's their in house G92 based board, with three phase power to address vick1000's concern: http://...

gainward passive 8800gt
Wow.
Gainward is working on one beastly heatsink for a passive 8800gt.
How can that not bend the heck out of the card? Maybe having a flat shunk of metal glued to almost the whole length of the card helps.

The board has effectively been superceded anyway by the GA-P35-DS3R at the same price point, and I can't see why anyone would choose it in preference (assuming you can even still find one). Every review I've seen has said the p35 has higher power consumption than the p965. Given the lack of stunnin...

Re: does a case like this exist?
I'm a fan of the Stacker 810 . It meets your 3 requirements, but may not be what you have in mind. The ports are at the very top. It has removable air filter. No doors in front of the optical drives (I hate that). It falls a bit short though. The filters are hell to get to (front grills need to be r...

Shadowknight you are missing the point (and being obnoxius ;) ). I am aware of that most cases are less than perfect. Should we not bring attention to these issues instead of of hailing the least imperfect case? Here is my idea of a "Fantasy Perfect case" ;) http://home.vasteras2.net/embargo/Perfec...

I have a hard time understanding this thread. Pages of people sure the r600 would destroy nVidia. Then a page of justifications when it didn't. What I don't understand is why people are so invested in this. Why some people hate the idea of an nVidia card performing better. Why people refuse to get a...

I tried watercooling a couple years ago. It lowered temps nicely on my Athlon 1400. Of course, now my aircooled Core 2 Duo runs cooler than the Athlon on water. I initially tried out water after losing 4 fans (two CPU fans, a GPU fan and a northbridge fan). I thought water might be more reliable. Th...

Welcome to SPCR! Thanks much! Even if I don't get to the levels of silence some here have attained, I'm moving in the right direction (not hard to do after that old machine), and SPCR was the inspiration. Yeah, that's the HR-05. Gets some flow from the bottom back fan, but fe...

unimatrix0, thanks for the advice. I guess I know what I'll be doing next. what's the acoustic level like at night? i would imagine 6-7 120mm fans will stack up It's not bad at all. Having more of them lets them spin slower and still move more air. Since 15 db + 15 db isn't 30 db (18 in fact, with 6...
