Thanks. Although I'm not in a tropical climate, the summer hardware temps will still climb 10-15*F or so (compared to winter temps). I've already had a Seagate HD fail in an external enclosure... although it was an older drive. Still, I thought it may have failed due to heat. So I'm a bit skittish a...

External drive for backup
I have an Asus P5B-E mobo with 2 internal sata ports and 1 IDE port. They are all filled. The IDE port has a older 300 Gb Seagate which is getting full (my backup drive). The largest IDE drive I find on NewEgg is a 750 Gb Seagate 7200.12. I'm considering my options to replace that older drive and wi...

...And now I'm stuck with this noisy annoying 7200.10. Interitus 0 - Power Outlet 5 is your final score. Sorry about your difficulties. I'm sorta surprised that you find the 7200.10 noisy. I just installed one to replace a 7200.7 that failed (I think it was heat related issues in a Dell) and it is ...

My HD321KJ has run flawlessly since I built the new computer back in March 2007. Matter of fact, it is the coolest drive (of 3 in my system). Speedfan 4.33 currently reports: HD0 - 35*C (Seagate 7200.7 - 300 Gb IDE) Backup HD1 - 33*C (WD 740ADFD - 74 Gb SATA) OS and programs HD2 - 27*C (Samsung HD32...

Yeah, it won't be pretty. But maybe taking power like joeyl said and rigging some sort of suspension aft of the HD assembly will make a difference. I have a spare 80mm fan. Not sure a 120 will fit, but I bet a 92mm would fit. That is an easy case to get into, but a lousy case design for cooling.. an...

Manual found here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim5150/en/sm/index.htm A friend has this computer that is about 1.5 years old. The Seagate 7200.7 SATA drive failed in it this week. I replaced the single drive with a Seagate 7200.10 320 Gb drive and added another WD 3200 AAKS (320 G...

I put dual 92mm Nexus fans in the front of my Solo. I have a 300 Gb Seagate 7200.7 on the bottom, a Samsung 320 Gb next up, a space and then a 10k rpm 74 Gig Raptor. I also use the Corsair HX520w and it is silent in my experience. The Seagate 7200.7 runs hottest at 37*C, the Raptor is next at 35*C a...

I have both an e4300 and an e6600. I've had trouble getting the e6600 past 350 FSB on my P5B-E rev 1.01g mobo. My experience thus far is that the e4300 on the ASRock 4coredual-VSTA mobo oc'd easily by 50% and the temps barely moved. IIRC, a 33% oc on the P5B-E and the temps wanted to climb a bit mor...

That's interesting jaganath. I need a little education here... what differentiates the e21x0 from the e4x00? L2 cache? They're both Allendale, right? And yet NewEgg differentiates them as Dual Core and C2D respectively. I'm not sure of the difference. e2160 e4300 I'm seeing about $25 diff between th...

Looking at AMD mobos, I have no clue what's desirable between the different NB chipsets: ATI VIA SIS AMD 3x Nvidia (nforce 500, nforce 4,geforce 700) At least with Intel mobos, I'm comfy with the p965 chipset and the C2D cpu. I tend to agree with you. Actually, it's more involved than just removing and replacing the goop when you consider the mobo likely has to come out of the case. At least, it would for me with the tower HSF I use. Come to think of it, even with the stock HSF, I would want to remove the mobo to replace...

Having just built a couple of C2D systems, I was planning to keep an old Dell PII/400Mhz running (albeit sluggishly) XP/pro in 384 Mb ram for a 3rd computer for the kids (ages 8-10)... I'm thinking the old PII just ain't worth keeping... in comparison. I just rebuilt an old P4/Northwood system with ...

I used Ceramique on a couple of recent C2D builds. I'm happy with it. But read here before assuming that Ceramique is definitely better than AS/5.

Looks like you're running XP. FYI, I haven't been able to get Coretemp and TAT to run on Vista/64. Anyone else? Also, what PSU are you using? Edit: nevermind. ASRock 4coredual VSTA
I just built this board tonight with an E4300 and 2 Gigs of DDR2-667 Kingston ram for ~$250 shipped. I brought over my 6600GT/AGP card but ditched my PC2700 ram for the inexpensive DDR2. Running stock, I'm seeing about 38-40*C in BIOS (HW monitor) using the stock cooler and AS Ceramique. SpeedFan 4....

Isaac, You are right. But of those 9 boards, only 4 have AGP (not including the recertified one), and one of those is not in stock. http://tinyurl.com/37h9wu However, for $200-250 or so, I can pretty well modernize this old PC. It'll cost me $150-200 more than just replacing the mobo with another 47...

I've looked at every DDR2/800 board that supports AGP on Newegg. The two boards listed above seem like the only/my best options. There are some PCChips and ECS boards but they only support DDR2 533. So... AMD or Intel on this project? Anyone have any experience on either of the 2 mobo's listed above...

Rebuilding an old PC
I just replaced on old PC with a new C2D I built on an E6600/P5B-E and Vista/64. I'm pretty happy with the new box thus far. I planned to wipe the disk and install Vista Home Premium on the old PC and let the kids use it for games, etc. It is a P4/1.8 Northwood on an Asus P4S533 (which would be an u...

I recently picked up one of those APC RS1500VA on closeout for about $100 to use on another PC. Haven't unboxed it yet. I use a TrippLite 750SLT on my main PC (C2D). It's very quiet. But if the power kicks off and the unit goes to battery, you'll hear the fan. One reason I got the 750SLT was to have...
