With a 120mm fan it can cool anything it fits on (which physically excludes nVidia 260/280 and GX2 cards). On an Ati HD4850 works great, way lower temperatures than stock even at passive, and HD4870 would also be just fine.

You'll be amazed how cool the card will run with an Accelero S1 (especially with a 120mm fan).

8800GT. It's not very expensive, and is the fastest of the three. DIRT is quite a demanding game.

How exactly did you test them? It could be that the fan connector you tried was itself disabled or temperature controlled.

Okay, the cooler reaches 40...42mm over the edge of the video card (8800GT), which is in turn about 5mm wider than the metal strip you screw the card to the case with. Removing the easily detachable plastic bit will shave off a good 8mm or so.

Difference between 256MB and 512MB isn't so much the average framerate (unless there's >256MB of textures on screen at once), but smoothness and less stuttering, similarly to using a computer with 512MB RAM vs 1 GB of RAM. I'd definitely say get the 512MB version if you plan to do any gaming.
