Do these temps look right?
I recently added a Thermalright XP-120 and JMC 120mm PWM fan to my Athlon64 X2 4200+ (89W) mounted on an ASRock 939Dual-VSTA motherboard. This is in a typical mid-tower case with two 80mm exhaust fans, one in the rear and one on the side panel. These fans are connected to my Antec TruPower "fan-only...

Thanks for the input, everyone. I finally decided on an XP-120 coupled with a JMC 120mm PWM fan and it's working out very well. Plenty of height clearance, good temps and complete silence. In fact, a single instance of Prime95 doesn't even cause the fan to ramp at all from it's <600rpm system idle s...

Well, I finally decided on the JMC 120mm fan, and I'm fairly happy with it. The fan is not quiet at full speed (2600rpm), but at least the sound is fairly low and dull rather that a high pitch whine. Still not something I would want to listen too every day. Ramping it down, it becomes barely noticab...

fabre, how is that JMC noise-wise? I've been looking at the 120mm version. So does it only ramp up until the temps start to come back down, then? So if it happens to be 40% when the temps start to decline, that's as high as it goes? Last thing I want is the fan ramping all the way to 100% when it do...

Help me understand my BIOS fan speed control
After finally deciding on a heatsink to use (XP-120), now I'm stuck on the fan selection. A major contributer to my confusion is a real lack of understanding of what my BIOS fan speed control is actually doing. This is an ASRock 939Dual-VSTA board, and in the BIOS under the H/W Monitor tab, I have a...

OK, so I guess the comment about Nexusfans working flawlessly with PWM must be referring to the 3pin variety then? So then it comes down to a Nexus with a Fanmate or a JMC 4 pin fan. Can anyone tell me which is a better option? Can the JMC stay silent or near silent throughout its operating range wi...

Confused about Nexus/Yate Loon 120mm Fans and PWM
I thought I had this down, but after reading the first post in http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=16393 , Im again confused. Specifically this quote: The Nexus "Real Quiet Fans" are astounding fans in the 80mm, 92mm, and 120mm categories. They work flawlessly on PWM... I thought a ...

A lot of good feedback here. As I said at the beginning, this is just something I've been thinking about. I don't really want to go out and buy a brand new heatsink that I know won't fit, just to see if the mod will work. But I've worked with copper tubing before, so I know it can be bent if careful...

How fragile are heatpipes?
I'm asking because I was wondering if a large tower heatsink could be modded to fit a shorter case. I know it would hurt cooling a bit, but would it be even feasible to remove the top 4-5 fins from a tower heatsink and recrimp and/or bend over the top ends of the heatpipes to make it fit? Probably n...

Appreciate the comments, guys. To answer some of your questions: My X2 4200+ is the 89W model. I'm shooting for max temps under load probably in the low 60s max. Really I'm much more concerned with noise than temps as long as it stays with safe operating conditions. Unfortunately, my PC case will no...

XP-120 or SI-120/128 ducted to case fan - will it work?
Due to height restrictions, the Ninja I'd really love to use is out of the picture, so I'm now looking at an XP-120 if I can find one, or SI-120/128. I'd prefer the XP-120 simply because it's shorter. 63mm + 25-38mm for a 120mm fan leaves me with around 16-29mm clearance to the side case exhaust fan...

silent server from old parts
I've got about 4-5 older but decent systems laying around since recently upgrading several family members. These range from probably around a PIII-500 to Duron 1GHz or so. I've also got an old AMD K6-2 450 and probably a K6-200 around here as well. My goal is to build a low power, slent (or near so)...

I posted not that long ago that I was looking for a passive CPU cooling solution in a height resticted case, and it seems from the responses I recieved that it just wansn't going to work. Here's the link to that thread, if anyone's interested, or wants to refresh their memory: http://www.silentpcrev...

I have ... two 7600GS passive video cards. Which passive 7600GS cards are they? I've been looking at replacing my loud whiney Leadtek 6800LE with either a passive 7600GS or 7600GT. Actually, I couldn't take the noise any longer and have temporarily replaced it with a passive 5700. The Gigabyte Sile...

Two reasons: First, it's the only intake fan in the system. Sure, i could move it to the front, but coming in from the side should help cool the passively cooled video card as well as provide a decent stream of cool air directly to the CPU heatsink. At last that was my thought. Second, it's a window...

Passive CPU cooling out for me?
I've been toying with several ideas to quiet my new build as much as possible, and have recently been intrigued by the idea of passive cooling. Using the stock (sans heatpipe) AMD HSF with a A64 X2 4200+, I've been getting idle temps around 32 degrees. Four hours into a Prime95 stress test, I'm look...

Thanks for all the replies. I definately understand the whole C'n'Q deal better now. I know the ASRock 939 Dual VSTA does have the 4 pin header, so I guess I may as well take advantage of it and get a fan with a 4pin connector as well. Maybe the fan control will make it quiet enough and I won't have...

That's kinda what I thought. So Cool 'n' Quiet will reduce power consumption and heat output, but does little by itself to reduce noise? If so, then you still need to either manually undervolt fans, or at least buy quieter ones, or use the motherboard's fan speed controls to actually achieve the "Qu...

Thanks. OK, say I get a 4 pin fan then, to let the motherboard control it's speed, but later decide I want to add a fanmate to make it quieter. (As I understand it, the fanmate is designed to work with 3 pin fans only, so say instead I manually volt-mod it) Will there be a problem with the motherboa...

Is a 4 pin CPU fan required for Cool 'n' Quiet?
First, let me say I tried searching since I figured this has probably been discussed already. Unfortunately, I didn't really find the answer I need. I have a Athlon 64 X2 4200+ CPU and an ASRock 939 Dual VSTA motherboard, which supports Cool 'n' Quiet. I'm looking to replace the stock heatsink and f...

Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Stock HSF - is it usable in a quiet rig?
I had the Thermalright XP-120 in my shopping cart when shopping for the above mentioned CPU, then I saw a picture of the stock HSF. It sure looks a lot better than a typical stock coller, that's for sure. Reminds me a lot of the XP-90, in fact. I'm not sure about the fan, though. BTW, this was adver...

First, please excuse my ingorance if this is something I should already know. I recently purchased an Antec TruePower 2.0 430W PSU.
