Re: This may be the Holy Grail of silence

So the main market is people who need legacy serial ports? What sort of equipment doesn't support USB? If they want to include the COM ports, they should just put them on the back with the rest of the I/O where they belong. Edit: Not that I disagree with you. It seems like they had some corporate c...

But what you quoted from andyb was describing the metro interface NOT Windows 8 as a whole. For completeness... He was replying to a statement that the Start Screen is just a bigger Start Menu. Which is true. It does not replace any of the other things he mentioned, which are still present in Windo...

Re: Windows 8: what do you think about it?

I agree with you in principle, but it actually goes way beyond that, it also replaces the start bar, the system tray, the quick launch icons and to some degree it IS the desktop.Andy Are you lying, or just wrong? Because Windows 8 has a Start Bar, with app pinning, and the system tray (no need for ...

I'm waiting for the Haswell NUC - that should alleviate the heat issue somewhat, and bring better graphics. The IVB NUC struck me as a stop-gap.

Why would you use 3.5" on a mITX? I'd go with an mSATA SSD and a 2.5" 1TB if you needed bulk storage. Whole point of mITX (IMO) is to make things crazy small.

Re: Anybody do more than a cursory comparison of 720p vs. 10

You also need to consider panel quality - I prefer 1080p (sharper eyes than average; still young), but a quality 720p looks better to me than a cheap 1080p screen. If you ever want to use it as a monitor, I'd strongly recommend 1080p. If you'll only ever be streaming Netflix or Hulu, 720p should be ...

Re: Noctua NH-L12-Very quiet, but not as effective as expect

You also need to be aware that while your IVB CPU has a lower TDP than the AMD one in the SPCR review, it has a higher heat density because the die is very small. This means the heatsink has less area to pull heat from, and the energy that remains raises the die temperature higher than the larger AM...

Re: Death of The PC or You're Just a Consumer

What makes you think it's the RAM makers making the killing? The markup is at the final stage. What you want to do is get into the business of selling overpriced memory upgrades to consumers who just click the "upgrade" checkbox when ordering.

If you're not gaming, why the GPU? The HD2500/4000 is more than enough for what you listed. Some parts of Photoshop, I believe, will use GPU acceleration, but is it really worth hundreds of dollars to speed up a few filters if you aren't a professional photographer working on hundreds of photos at a...

Re: 2 DIMMs or 4 DIMMs

Memory isn't a significant source of heat anyway, so unless seriously power-limited, I wouldn't opt for the 1.35v, which probably makes less of a difference than whether you run a screensaver or blank screen. If you're set on it, though, go 2x8gb if you can afford it - always better to leave room on...

Re: Glutton for punishment - Silencing a Poweredge 2950

Don't forget that the newer Intel chips have a host of instruction sets for dealing with VMs to aid performance. Let me add my voice to the chorus and suggest an i5-3550 with a ridiculously big tower heatsink. The reality is, you're going to spend more than that to get this thing to where you want, ...

Re: Haswell rumors?

Blizzard games aren't GPU intensive...and tend to just need a fast dual core. Assuming 1080p, you could probably play it with the HD4000 if you really dialed down the quality level (no AA, etc). The GT3 is supposed to double the fps compared to HD4000...but you still won't be able to turn up the ey...

Yeah, I can never remember if the process or architecture change is the tick. Either way, I'm honestly fine with getting an i5 from the first tranch of CPUs released - that's usually where the strong graphics are anyway; the i3-xxx5s don't usually come out until much later. Gaudy CPU power never goe...

I'm well aware of what Haswell brings. I'm wanting to build an HTPC that can play Diablo3 acceptably, and hoping the GT3 graphics will allow that without a graphics card. And I'm a bit of a chip geek, so I enjoy playing with the new ones.

Did it seem like we had more Ivy Bridge rumors at this point last year than Haswell rumors this year? Feels like we've barely heard anything since late last year and I'm waiting on it for my next machine. Am I just missing the rumors, or are we in a holding pattern?

Windows can be installed from a thumbdrive. So can basically any other software you name. And even if you install from a disc, you can then put the drive away for a LONG time. I wanted one in my current laptop, but I've barely used it. Not next time. Blu-Ray is NOT obsolete for video, but it's best ...

Re: Philosophy of PC building - future proofing.

Agreed on all the points about upgrading the CPU usually not being worth it - when it bottlenecks, you need a whole new architecture, not a few more MHz. RAM is cheap - buy at least 8 now, leave room for 16. Gobs of RAM never goes out of style. Have the ability to upgrade/ add a graphics card - that...

The price/ capacity of SSDs should only be a concern for people who, for whatever reason, insist on having a single drive for anything. With the 256gb Samsung 830 being WELL under $200 now and very reliable, any performance computer should have one of those and add 2tb spinny drives as required. Dat...
