Sorry about that, I was referring to the model numbers besides the cache values on the 500GB drives, which instead pf "5000" have "6400". I was sleepy when I wrote this, so it came out wrong. Sorry about that. Oh, I see it now, sorry for the misunderstanding. I wonder if they’ll quietly update th...

2) A 4-platter, 7-head 1.5TB model (500GB/platter; it can also be a 4/8, short-stroked, though); ...wouldn't this be a 3-platter model - maybe with 6 heads??? That would have been my expectation too, but if you read back through this thread, Miguel generally knows his stuff. :) If you look at the P...

Re: Confirmed by WD
The official WD CaviarGP page now lists 2 TB in its descriptions, exactly like in the pamphlet. Massive capacity - Capacities up to 2 TB offer the most available capacity for storage-intensive programs and space-hungry operating systems, like Window Vista®, with plenty of room left over for photos...

What I wonder is how many platters this drive has. I'm guessing it has to be 4 or 5 platters. Seagate currently holds platter density record at 375GB per platter. I can certainly see WD upping that limit to 400GB per platter, which could make it a 5 platter drive. Even with the assumption that West...

The number of rpms is the key to noise with the stock cooler, what numbers are you seeing? The stock cooler on my E6300 at 1.83GHz idles at 1200-1400rpm in cool weather (with the fan set to the slowest speed in the BIOS), which I’m OK with. In hot weather or with both cores fully loaded, the fan d...

I haven’t been out to look at any enclosures yet, but one that is widely available in Australia is the Vantec NexStar 2, which has a 40x40mm fan. http://www.vantecusa.com/p_nst525uf.html Lo and behold, where should I find what I’m looking for but right under my nose? SPCR has reviewed a drive th...

Hi, I’ve just decided that I also need an external DVD burner. I’m kind of used to the loud whoosh of burning DVDs at 8x on my old Pioneer 107D, so I’d expect 16x burning to be even louder. That’s no biggie for me for the few minutes it’ll take to burn each disc, though obviously I’d lik...

And I was getting all excited about a Zalman-cooled AGP 7600GT.
This should eat that card for breakfast.

AGP 7600GT w/ Zalman cooler (Galaxy A76GT-Z/256D3)
I’ve been scouring eBay and the web for a suitable upgrade from an AGP GeForce 6800 (NU) to something around a 6800GT, but with a quiet cooler. The options are pretty limited as there are very few cards selling on eBay with aftermarket Zalman or Arctic Cooling coolers. Buying a regular 6800GT and ...
