Re: Quiet down Ryzen 5 3600 in FD R5

The case is indeed with it's back near a brick wall. There's about 20cm of space between the back and the wall. I could try and test moving the back fan to the front next time I open the case. No real urgency. I'm still evaluating the current fan profile. The back and front fan are the same model. T...

Re: Quiet down Ryzen 5 3600 in FD R5

Turns out it's mostly the exhaust fan that I'm able to hear. Makes sense I guess, cause its noise is pretty much going undampened straight out the back of the case. Although I've done it the other way around for years, I've focused on keeping that one's speed as low as possible. In contrast, I've in...

However, my 3600 only has 1 chiplet, so I should be good either way

ok, thanks guys. I have some options to play with. (If I don't forget) I'll update this topic with my results. Correct, AC5 is outdated (I had read that same review) and my tube is already a few years old (as mentioned). I'll have a look which good alternatives are available on Amazon, and probably ...

Re: Quiet down Ryzen 5 3600 in FD R5

While doing a torture test (Prime95 blend test + FurMark GPU stress test) the CPU temp stabilizes at 76°C after a few mins. Ryzen Master reports the PPT of the CPU is at 100% of 88W, and I see the individual core speeds drop to 3850MHz. When I stop the torture test the temp drop back to 36°C quite q...

Quiet down Ryzen 5 3600 in FD R5

I recently switched from a 4-year old Skylake Core i5 to an AMD Ryzen 5 3600. My Skylake build was extremely quiet: inaudible during normal activities, only low noise when stressing the CPU over a long period of time. Again, I chose my new components with low noise in mind, and re-used my Fractal De...

Re: Quiet Skylake desktop shopping list

Excuse me for blowing a bit of dust off this thread  I've been using this build for the past 3 months now, and I'm absolutely happy with it. Noise-wise I was content with my previous P183 build, but this even takes it to a whole other level. Asus' Fan Xpert 3 feature really comes through. For ...

Re: Quiet Skylake desktop shopping list

I have SpeedFan on my systems for quite some years now, but didn't use it for throttling down the fan speed. As mentioned earlier, I used FanMates and in my last build a 5.25" controller. I use SpeedFan occasionally for sensor readings, but it's not my sole source for that. Plenty of other tools tha...

Re: Quiet Skylake desktop shopping list

You're taking my remarks way to personal, Luca :D Like "non-objective PSU purist", I meant that in general and not by any means you. Let that be clear. We'll forget the whole discussion about PSU's. I'm quite certain it'll be the RM450. If I'd change my mind, my backups are the E10 and the G-360. Mo...

Re: Quiet Skylake desktop shopping list

I do agree not to buy right away, I'll wait at least another 2-3 weeks, probably till early October. At the moment I can make my order of the i5-6600 at 4 Dutch or Belgian webshops, but all of them still need to backorder. It's not that I need a new desktop really quick. The current one still runs. ...

Re: Quiet Skylake desktop shopping list

* PSU: Corsair RM450 450W will be way overkill for this build, and it's definitely the most expensive PSU I'll have bought so far. But this PSU has very good efficiency at low load, and the "Zero RPM Fan Mode" feature did it for me: under 40% load (180W) the fan stays off. With this build it'll nev...

This review made me doubt if I should use the GD09 as the home for my new HTPC build in a few months time... Why don't you keep the GD04? Cause I plan to reuse my old HTPC in my living room. And the GD04 doesn't have USB3 ports (not that I'll actually need them...). I always find new purposes for m...

Re: SilverStone Grandia GD09 & GD10 HTPC Case

Hi Freeco, if the GD04 has been working well for you then GD09/GD10 would work just as well if not slightly better. You have to take into account that SPCR's less than favorable verdict is based on the test system they use. Compared to modern mid/larger tower cases, the GD09/GD10 were obviously out...

Re: SilverStone Grandia GD09 & GD10 HTPC Case

Well, the cabinet is what it is... If possible I would allow a bit of a larger gap, but it would need some modification to shift the center beams a bit and I don't want to go there. In the 4-5 years I've used this HTPC I haven't had heat problems worthy of remembering anyway. I'm quite sure my 7x160...

PSU for upcoming Broadwell build

hi all, I did some (early) research for a good and quiet/silent PSU over the weekend. I plan on buying a new HTPC when Broadwell is out. So yeah, I still have time to gather info. :) Thing is that the last couple of years most PSU's are +400W rated, while power consumption of a typical desktop has g...

Re: Silverstone Grandia GD05: A Versatile HTPC Case

Sure, this case is sturdy enough to support the weight of a LCD. I'm also not too fond of putting a case (directly) on the floor, but I've put my desktop on a home-made trolley next to my desk: it's just a simple MDF board the size of the case with 4 wheels screwed to the bottom. This way it won't s...

Re: Antec P183 v3 Ivy Bridge upgrade

If you want to keep things simple, you can use the 500RPM model.
But I have a fan controller, so I chose the 1200RPM model and can easily find the sweet spot. Running at the lowest possible speed is good for my built.
If I would need to buy them again, I'd pick the 800RPM model and slightly undervolt.

I've used quite a couple of tools to monitor the temps: CoreTemp, HWiNFO64 and Speedfan. I had a couple of others, but they weren't Ivy Bridge compatible (yet). All the latest version of course, and all showed more or less the same temps. How do you calibrate temp sensors? Without specialized HW I c...

hey guys, a couple of weeks ago I've upgraded my Intel i5 750 desktop to Ivy Bridge. Time to share it with the world. hmm, yeah, it's kinda a hybrid horizontal/vertical case. It'll look kinda weird with those feet at the side. And the exhaust for the PSU at the front? And worse, the airstream is then blocked by the bezel?? Weird case :) But I've more or less made up my mind to get the Silverstone case. It's just wi...

doubt Seasonic S12II-380 <> Enermax Pro82+ II 385W

I'm preparing for my next upgrade. I've already decided on most components, but when going over my shopping list again, I started to doubt about my choice of power supply. I initially went for the Seasonic S12II-380 , as it's recommended here on the site and I won't need a lot of power anyway. My cu...

indeed, both are tower cases. If I'd go for a tower, I wouldn't need to buy a new one, cause my wife's desktop is now housed in an Antec Solo, and I have plenty of older tower cases collecting dust in the attic :)

Pricey? I wouldn't call that MS-Tech case pricey at all. It's just the fact that I'd never heard about that brand before, that makes me doubt its build quality. Re: Switching from Antec Solo to P183 v3

Have you read the review on both cases, Justice99? I remember they're pretty close... I don't remember what exactly but there was something about the R3 that I didn't like and convinced me to go for the P183. Padding the P183 isn't necessary either as it's side panels are very sturdy. But I did it a...
