Re: Home made wooden "chimney" case for mini ITX
awesome, great job with it. you need a row of leds all the way around it like the whopper :D leds that showed memory usage would be cool, i had some like this from corsair. you could easily map some flexible plastic from the memory to the exterior of the case, or rewire and move the leds for somethi...

Re: Pillar shaped diy case with small footprint (chimney eff
Only one comment: As soon as you add a single quiet 120mm fan running at 500rpm (with a good HS on the CPU), there is no need for any convection effect & you can reduce the size of the box down to what's needed to just hold the components and allow good airflow. It's fun to think about, and experim...

Re: suggestions for video card setup
That sounds like it hardly makes noise even at stock speeds? I only demand a level of noise that makes me not notice it. Another thing I am curious about is whether the fans spin up in a multi-monitor environment (at stock settings), since the card reportedly gets louder when under load. correct, e...

Re: 5 GHz of Silent Powa w/ 6950
My old system e6600 2.4ghz w 8800gtx load 275w idle 235w w/ no GPU stress new system load 145w idle 60w (dont remember if it was gpu stressed or not, will do another test and post again) since my system is at idle most of the time, that is a savings of $15/month in power! that is for 24h/day though,...

Re: suggestions for video card setup
I think MSI's model should be sufficiently quiet and would be cheaper and easier than going with a separate cooler. I think you should be not fully right: IIRC that MSI at stock settings should be around 18-19dB at idle, and 31-33dB at load, quite far from being quiet (an AC AXP should go around 15...

Re: XFX 6850 dual fan
I bought a XFX 8800 GTX 5 years ago when they first came out, the video card showed corrupted bios and windows screens out of the blue a few months ago, called XFX they promptly sent me a new Radeon HD 5750 as a replacement. Double thumbs up for the warranty and their handling of their replacement. ...

Re: 5 GHz of Silent Powa w/ 6950
Thanks for the comments :) I do coding/game dev on it, and all my games and workflow are single threaded, to speed that up GHZ is of the most importance. I read a lot of info about using high voltages, and no one could provide a solid answer, most of what I found is peoples guesses, and several peop...

Re: April Sandy Bridge Build (Coding/Gaming)
I just built a new rig for coding, see my other thread for my build. CPU: its not worth the money IMO, for coding my #1 goal is high GHZ, and 2500k is supposed to be a lot easier to overclock than the 2600k, so I went with it. visual studio doesn't compile using threads unless you are compiling mult...

Re: 5 GHz of Silent Powa w/ 6950
I have about 1.5TB of media and backups, but most of that is HD video I'll never use again, you can easily watch movies and music off the NAS, more than enough speed. It is easy to setup, uses low power, and has many features, you can also use it as a Time Machine backup which is nice. But for the m...

Re: 5 GHz of Silent Powa w/ 6950
Congrats on the speed, but isn't the processor melting? I'm uneasy with any sensor reading over 60c. Its idle most of the time 33C, when I'm working on my game its at maybe 30% load, so 40-50C, and when gaming maybe a little higher. Only under prime95 does it get as hot as that screenshot, wh...

Re: 5 GHz of Silent Powa w/ 6950
Thanks :D Yeah I wanted to keep the system as quiet as possible so I bought a Synology NAS and put 2 2TB drives in RAID 1. Speeds to it are around 20MB/s write and 35MB/s read, not great but doable. I think in the future I might move one of the drives to my computer and put it in my LOGISYS HD silen...

5 GHz of Silent Powa w/ 6950
Here is my new build :) I wanted something that was better in every way than my previous desktop (P180 e6600 2.4GHz GTX 8800) and am more than pleased. Using the Lian Li A05NB my new system is literally half the weight of my previous system (19lbs vs 48lbs), and its much smaller, both bonuses. I did...

Re: Ducted CPU heatsink fan with NZXT EVO
from my experience it doesn't matter how many fans you have if they are at low rpm, and a good noise. if you have good airflow then lower all fans to 600 rpm and you shouldn't be able to hear them, if you can then get nexus or noctuas. once you quiet those down you will probably hear your video card...

Re: Improving airflow in Lian Li PC-A05
I just built a new sandy system and decided on this case before I knew about the airflow problems, the case is beautiful and I love it, it weighs literally half of my P180 build (19lbs vs 40lbs) and it is much smaller, but it does have a major airflow design problem as can be easily calculated. Prob...

Re: Acoustically Isolated Case Design
Thank you for the info L) I decided to go with the Lian Li A05 and if that is too loud I will build some baffles around it kind of like what you have done. I was thinking of building the baffles as more an extension of the case rather than an entire box around it, since that would defeat the point o...

I am building a new Sandy system and was thinking of building my own case, but before doing so was wondering if anything existed like what I have in mind, or if anyone has comments on my design. Features: Acoustically isolated, sound must bounce off a minimum of 5-6 surfaces to escape. Thermally iso...

Looking for case with 100% hexagon holes
Looking for an ATX case with those small hexagon holes in every side of the case: front, back, sides, top, even bottom. Does anyone know of any case close to this?
I'm doing a special build and before venturing to make my own custom case thought I would see if there is anything close already made.

Not an avid cyclist. The idea is from aerodynamics knowledge. The teardrop shape is the most ideal shape for a cross section traveling through air. A tear drop (wing shape) shape has the same wind resistance as a cylinder something like 4-10 times its cross sectional size! Yes I doubt you would hear...

blowers vs fans
Has SPCR looked at blowers vs fans? I did a search but didn't find any discussion on it. I have read the blowers are more efficient than fans. Perhaps they would yeild lower RPMs and less noise than a standard fan at the same CFM?
