Re: Completly passive pc

It is relatively difficult to build an passive pc and keep the temperatures under control in all circumstances, it needs a lot more than simply choosing some components, bolt them together and be successful. The generated heat has to go somewhere. If you add one or more slow running fans the heat is...

Re: Transforming Current PC to be Silent

According to the asus support website your i7 cpu should work on you asus motherboard https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8P67/HelpDesk_CPU/ . But it needs bios version 3207 or newer. You might want to upgrade the bios with the old working processor before you switch cpu. Your video card will also wo...

Re: First build after 7 years

Here is a nice cpu benchmark for the witcher 3 http://www.techspot.com/review/1006-the-witcher-3-benchmarks/page5.html The Intel i7 is 'nice' when you want the fastest, video encoding etc. is faster on the i7, but the i5 is the biggest bang for the buck. If you are looking for good reviews and bench...

Re: Down the rabbit hole / PC horror stories

I had an AMD Thunderbird 800mhz on an Asus motherboard. The cpu cooler was dying of old age, dust of other misfortune so I decided to replace the cpu cooler. The installation was with an flat screw-driver and a lot of force and bending. (Stupid system on the Socket A motherboards). When installing t...

I would stay away from the Samsung 840 EVO. It has a serious read-spead bug on older data, see anandtech . There is an fix out which works for Windows systems, but I am wondering if it is just a firmware glitch or that they are hiding something more. There are several competitors out there which mo...

Re: SFF Workstation advice

The 840 and 840 evo are built with tlc nand, of which they say have +/- 1000 program/erase cycles. Most other drives are using mlc nand chips which are capable of 3000 -5000 p/e cycles. Intel's drives usually have 5000 p/e cycles and are more expensive, (and have the Intel name, and fame, which isn'...

Re: SFF Workstation advice

The samsung 840 evo is very fast, but has a limited life-span when it comes to writing. It is meant for consumer use and not made as a work-horse. The pro series (840 / 850 pro) will last a lot longer. If you are running vm's from your ssd and comiling a lot, you will write a lot of data to your ssd...

Memory is very cheap, I would add more ram. If it is not in use by your programs, it will be used as disk-cache and speed-up your machine.
2gb seems very little.

Re: After help with Low Power Fileserver, N36L too small

I would advice at least an intel i5, but not the I????k versions. The i5 has support for vt-d instructions, which are especially made for virtualization, it speeds up vm's a lot. Besides that it are quad core CPUs which offer a lot of calculating power. The intel i7 has 4 cores and hyper threading, ...

If you look at reviews from website as anandtech.com, Intel cpu's are à lot faster than their and counterparts, as can be seen in this article. http://anandtech.com/show/7677/amd-kaveri-review-a8-7600-a10-7850k/11 If you want performance I would advice an i5 or i7 from intel with enough memory. Re: Asus Q87T temperature issues with Akasa Euler case

If you touch the heat sink when the CPU is hot, the heat sink should also be very hot. If the heat sink is cold, I should worry about the contact between the CPU and the cooler. If the contact isn't good, the CPU will overheat and eh cooler should remain cold. An other program to show the CPU temper...

If your PSU would be bad and would give voltage fluctuations it can create all kinds of strange unreproducable behaviour. You could try to reset the bios with the motherboard jumper and see if that changes anything but I suspect your conclusion that the motherboard is the problem is a correct assump...

Re: Help me build budget pc suitable for me!

I would go for an Intel i5. When you are developing, compiling, multitasking, a quad-core cpu really helps. And from my experience, and SSD for OS, IDE and compiling really speeds up things, especially when you are programming on larger java projects. It is amazing how much difference an SSD makes :...

Re: New build, which fans?

SSD: Corsair Force Series GT 60GB, SATA 6GB/s 60 gb is quite small. Linux would fit on it if you don't have to much data-files, but Windows eats disk-space. SSD's don't like to be filled totally, it will degrade their performance quite a bit when written often and will wear them out. 128gb ssd's ar...

If you have spare time, you can always partition and format the drive in advance, that saves time while installing windows, especially if you don't use a quick format but a full format.
