I don't think there was ever a good passive solution for Socket A. I'm typing this on my own Socket A system, the best HS I could ever find for it was & is a Thermalright SI-97A. Runs very cool and very quiet with a 120mm Scythe fan at 5V ducted directly to the HS. Good luck finding one, though- the...

If only there were a good way to get an Xclio fan without buying a whole case. $20 here . Keep in mind this fan is not something one tucks out of the way in an existing case. Unless (like Bluefront) you have extensive DIY skills and the workshop tools to back up that knowhow, buying the fan already...

edit: there's a problem. The GeminII fin stack has a very large area. The cross-sectional area of the "air duct" leading upward from the GeminII, on its way to the exhaust port, must have that same very large area at every point, or the newly-narrow point becomes the "choke point". In addition, the...

Because the GeminII is awfully low, I probably won't be able to figure out a way to pass the air flow through the GeminII before it goes out the exhaust port. But the spot cooling is working fine. It'd be hard to get a duct from the side-intake big fan to the underside of the GeminII, so why not du...

I modded my 180 to take a fan in the front of the lower bay. I didn't have to remove the whole bracket, so my lower HD cage still screws into place, and my fan isn't wedged tight up against the lower HD cage, either. http://picasaweb.google.com/Kremmit/P180LowerChamberMods I actually ended up not us...

is the clip on holes for the heatsink clip of the K7 the same as the AM2? If so, is it possible to bend it enough to fit? Don't really want to break the K7 clip and I can't really do too much modding right now since I won't have my tools to do that until I go back home in June. Dunno, never had an ...

Ive only seen 1 fan try to eliviate the first point. i forget where, but it basically suspended the fan with magnetism from the edges of the casing, and used that magnetism to rotate the blades. Seems like a good idea to eleviate this point of noise, but i havnt seen many companies adopt this techn...

The stock grills on the P180 are made from big square holes, plenty of light will go through those. The filters, on the other hand, are a pretty tight mesh, and will probably cut down on the light some. They won't block it off, though. As for which fans are "optional" and which come already installe...

The image thingy isn't working because you're not entering the correct URL for your pictures. If you look at your photobucket page, it's got the URL's listed. For instance, the one you tried should've been: And that gives y...

Re: GTX not GTS
However, I would still reccommend the P180...I have one, with the 8800GTX and room for 9 HDDs using this: Silverstone CFP51-B Aluminum 5.25" to 3.5" bay converter with 120mm fan However, this will limit you to only 1 5.25" optical bay. You could get 10 HDs if you skip the optical drive and get a 3....

J. Sparrow, good point about the fan hub. My fan is mounted 8 or so inches away from my HS, at the other end of a duct. So I've got no hub-created dead spot, and as a result, I tend to forget about it. Good thing the Thermalright guys are smarter than me, hey? Every cooler has a limit, that's...

a danger we're talking past each other here. The 140mm fan on the Dominator is because the cooling grid on the Dominator is 140mm square. Aha, gotcha. That's the think about online discussion; sometimes something gets lost in translation between writer and reader. Now, in the second paragraph above...

I think I've figured out what's going on. My 2-fan duct has the same cross-sectional area from start to finish. This means the velocity of the air is uniform from the entrance to the exit. It seems to me that the first fan has to do the heavy lifting, and the second fan gets pretty much of a free r...

For that matter, the SI-120 is only 90mm tall, and the SI-128 is 91.5mm tall. On either of those, you'd have to cut the "support struts" away to allow the fan to be mounted, but I'm sure the heatpipes are strong enough to hold the heatsink up without the struts. Don't forget the K8 mounting on the ...

Thanks to all for their advice. I emailed Thermalright tech support about the shim for the SI-97. Here's their response: "You can use it without the shim as you seem to know what you are doing. The shim was included because many users don't!! " That seems to be the definitive statement on this topi...
