Any advantage to connecting gigabit ethernet to PCIx16 slot?

I understand from a peak theoretical bandwidth standpoint, they will be the same, so that's not what I'm asking... CPU-----G31 Chipset-----ICH7-----HDDs | | | | | | | | | | PCIe x16 PCIe x1 This is for a Windows Home Server. The PCIe lanes on my motherboard are connected as shown above. What I'm won...

While changing voltage settings will help, it doesn't make that much a difference at idle as it used to. For starters, RAM is pretty low on power consumption as-is. Also, with the Nehalem microarchitecture (in this case, Clarkdale), the CPU has very good power gating, meaning that instead of the cor...

Not making any normative claims, just some points about the decision. The decision was not very clean-cut. It wasn't exactly a 5-4 decision. Hysteresis - the actual definition is some kind of "lag in effect". What it means in this instance is that when your card determines that the fan speed needs to be changed, it will ramp it up/down gradually, instead of instantaneously. This helps a lot when you are at a threshold temperature and the...

Sorry for the thread hijack, but is there any coil whine noise coming from the 5870/5850 VRMs? I had a few Radeon 4890s, and all of them whined terribly. With the stock cooler on it was hard to detect, but after putting on an aftermarket cooler the coil whine was unbearable, even when I was in a nor...

On my last two cars (2001 Mazda Miata & 2006 Pontiac G6), the front calipers are "standard", which is to say to retract the pistons all I do is take a clamp and push them back in. But to retract the rear pistons requires some kind of black magic. ...

It will handle your new hardware. I have a Core i7 920 @ 3.8GHz and an overclocked Radeon 4890 that takes about 430W AC extreme load (Furmark + Prime95). Taking the PSU efficiency into consideration, the computer's only pulling about 355W DC. Since your computer should pull much less, you'll be more...

Anything pushing that amount of air is going to be noisy. Are you sure you need that much airflow? If you drop down to around 1000rpm, a Nexus fan would be pretty good, or even a 1200rpm Slipstream. I still think these would be too noisy, but they would definitely be quieter than an S-Flex at 1600. ...

What kind of thermal paste do you have? If it's good stuff like Arctic Silver 5 or MX-2, then the paste is hands-down better than a stock pad. They are hard-wired to a switch, which then runs to a molex power connector. It's possible (and very easy) to unscrew the switches from the back of the case, so they can be removed with the stock fans.

You don't mention what brand it is...a good-quality 600W PS would definitely be overkill. The only "bad" thing about using a higher-power PSU is that generally speaking, PSUs are not at their peak efficiency at low loads. It isn't very noticable, however, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. There...
