I am pretty sure the vm01 will fit; it's mounting system would seem to be very flexible (which is part of the reason why it can be a bit of a pain to get attached at first).

Re: XFX 8600GT XXX + AeroCool VM-01

Jedster, are things still going well? Where did you get the VM-101? Also, what other coolers do you recommend (e.g. Thermalright, Zalman, etc.) that will fit the this card? I'm idling around 55 C with the stock cooler. Yeah everything is still great. I have never used other coolers but you can get ...

I'm not exactly sure what you mean but IIRC, the holes used for the passive cooler were pretty close to the GPU and were normal in size.

XFX 8600GT XXX + AeroCool VM-01

I just got an XFX 8600GT XXX at Newegg. I'm an idiot, so I didn't install the driver to control the card's fan noise. It was, as you might expect, a bit of a leaf blower. But not only am I an idiot, I'm a fool, because I didn't think about the fact that all I needed to do was undervolt the card's fa...

I have a passive 7600GS made by EVGA in a Silverstone LC17. I only use DVI and I run MCE2005. It gets the hottest when doing 1080i output. I made a small mod to the case and put an exhaust vent above the video card and PCI slots (tuners can get quite hot). With a 120mm fan running at 600rpm, the vid...

I love conspiracy theories. When you get the replacement, is it AFTER having sent in your original drive? If so, have you kept note of the serial numbers?

I assume this is a desktop drive? (If it's for a laptop, you shouldn't be using the E5K100 anyway.) I have a 5K100 which definitely does not make that noise, though it does have the annoying head load/unload noise, and for some reason the Hitachi feature tool cannot change its APM level. I would def...

Bummer! My TV is now louder than my HTPC!

Well thanks to all you sickos, I've acquired the knowledge to build a very quiet computer. (I had never thought of using tin snips for case mods, wow they are great!) Anyway, I've now deployed that knowledge and wouldn't you know it: my damn tv is louder than the htpc. It's an SXRD and uses fans to ...

Re: Sample variance?

I've bought two Samsung drives recently for a new quiet system - a HD321LJ and a HD501LJ. The 320GB drive is nice and quiet, but it seems that the 500GB drive produces a much more noticable humming sound due to vibration (even though I have it mounted on silicone grommets in the bottom of an Antec ...

My solution to 2.5" hard drive noise was much cruder--I simply entombed the whole thing in a homebrew enclosure. Here's what I've been able to find. For both the Fujitsu 5400RPM 2.5" sata drives and the hitachi drives, there is an idle mode called "active idle" in which the head is not unloaded. the hitachi feature tool (and perhaps hddscan) should be able to set the advanced power management level (for drives...
