Re: E6600 - best heatsink that fits on an Antec Fusion?
What motherboard did you use? We already have an Asus P5B-VM being shipped our way, I think the cpu socket is too close to the edge of the board and would interfere with the 120m exhaust fans on the Fusion. This is the board: I'm using an older P4 shuttle board. Not really the right size for the cas...

Re: nsk2400 - top cover closing
Hi, I had the top cover off my case for a number of months. Now when I have gone back to this case and tried to close the top cover. But now I find that it seems to get stuck about 1/8" from closing all the way. Something seems to be blocking the cover from closing flush against the front of the ca...

Re: E6600 - best heatsink that fits on an Antec Fusion?
Greetings everyone, I'm helping a friend build an HTPC based on the C2D E6600. After much persuasion I convinced him that the intel stock HSF would have to go. :) What would be a good alternative heatsink that fits inside a Fusion? I'm considering the CNPS7000B-Cu since looks like the CNPS7700-Cu i...

Re: Is NSK2400 really quiet (and good for Linux)?
I just posted about the NSK1300 case that someone recommended to me, but I found out that it only has one drive slot to plug in your DVD ... so you can't plug in a PC card reader, so for me it's out. Looks like the NSK2400 has 2 slots so I was wondering if anyone had any experience with it. Is it r...

Re: Fan has trouble getting started
I've noticed one of my fans, a Yate Loon D12SL, won't start up sometimes when I turn on my computer it will sit there trying to start, but won't get to spinning unless I give it a nudge, then it works fine it's plugged directly into the motherboard, so I was thinking maybe it's not getting enough p...

zalman 7700?
I'm using one of the zalman 7700's now with a yate loon replacement fan at 5 volts in that case. I don't have the abit board but I'm considering essentially duplicating your current setup. Thermaltake has a rev B adapter that can be modified to work with the zalman unit. Considering the whole HS and...

recommended mATX board/s?
I'm looking for a MB with a SPDIF out on it that isn't going to require a separate PCI slot/blank to do it like the Asus seems to require. I see the Abit board has it, but the one that I see listed a lot around here is getting some miserable reviews on NewEgg regarding DOA, video, and sound issues. ...

I was using one for about a month on a GF4 Ti 4600. This was "in" a shuttle XPC. I eventually removed it as I like being able to close the case. Temps were warm/hot to the touch but without any video glitches. There was no extra cooling fans applied. The stock cooler for the Shuttle box was likely a...

When I talked to the people who make the EAR fan isolators, they told me to check here. http://www.mcmaster.com/ Do a search for fan mount. You should find a link for "Vibration Damping PVC Miniature Fan Mount". About halfway down you will find them under PVC Miniature Fan Mounts. I forget which siz...

~200$
I'd say I've spent well under 100$ getting my shuttle boxes fairly quiet. IF you count all the stupid stuff I've tried because I didn't know better, AND the difference in costs when I changed video cards and such, then it's closer to 200$. I'm obviously not done yet due to the fact that my video car...

Depends largely on what you're trying to do with it. If you are REALLY looking for silent, you have a better shot with the bigger cases. If you want fairly quiet you can do so with a Shuttle box. Replacement of the main fan will be necessary, and replacing the Power Supply fan is required as well. T...

Re: Commercial heat pipes
I'm going to be meeting with their area rep, but I haven't determined the exact configuration I want to use. Probably a block mounting to the CPU which has holes for 4-6 of these heatpipes which goes to a larger block above the processor that is mounted to the chassis panel/large side heatsink. Ple...

I might be able to run a 9600 in my other Shuttle box. That has a Ti 4200 in it. So that's always an option. It sounds like I'm going to try a 9700 and see if I can somehow cram it in there, passive or otherwise. The biggest problem is just that there really isn't much in the way of clearance in tho...

Which runs cooler, Ati or Nvidia?
Having seen some of the photos floating around of the new Radeon 9800 and the passive cooling system on it.... I'm considering replacing the Ti 4600 card I have. It's hot and due to space limitations in my Shuttle box I'm having difficulty keeping it cool and quiet. Replacing the fan helped some, bu...

More LED madness
Still massively off topic.... But possibly of some use in the near future. There is currently in development a 5 watt white LED. This is of interest for many reasons. A company called SureFire is evaluating this for possible use in their flashlights. They are hoping for light in the 80-100 lumen ran...

Get the new drive. I have a Maxtor 120. With accoustic management on and a set of EAR isolation mounts it is SILENT. Fan noise by FAR is the biggest issue. And the vast majority of it comes from my video card fan ( replaced and undervolted ). Sell off the old drives. Try a Barracuda IV or V. I doubt...

Check under Technik and CPU Cooling.... http://www.deltatronic.info/index.html I would love to see an entire system done this way if possible. Just to see if it's possible to have a silent system. Only the Hard Drive would have moving parts. Everything else might be passive cooled. Don't put anythin...

I would take Viewsonics response time advertisements with large amounts of salt. Tom's Hardware has found that Viewsonic LCDs tend to have ghosting problems even when supposedly they have the same response time of other makers. Sometimes markedly so. I would much rather have an LCD vs a CRT. Heat is...

The 4600 card doesn't have heatsinks on the memory at all. Supposedly they run cool enough to not require them. I'm not sure if the 4400 also uses the same memory, although I seem to recall that the PNY versions do. It IS rather a rare thing to see chips without heatsinks nowadays. I remember when h...

You can try these guys. I'm not sure how expensive they'd be, but you might always try and get a sample from them.

Energy sources - rather OT but still....
Lots of problems and solutions on the energy front. Nuclear is a good option. The laws in the US would need major changing for a couple of reasons. 1) We consider plutonium a weapon and also waste. Most other countries do not and leave the plutonium in the reactors to be burned as fuel. If we did th...

Experiences with SS51G
First thing I did was ditch the stock CPU fan. I replaced it with a Pabst 8412 n/2gml. Airflow is ~26cfm at 19dBA. At least that's the rating. Given the stock fan is rated at 39.5 cfm at ~34dBA it seems ok. The stock fan normally did ~2/3 max speed so it's in the right ballpark. I mounted this by kn...
