Installing a resistor on a case fan

I've got a bunch of 120mm yate loon case fans that I'm looking to slow down a bit. I've got a couple 2 watt, 68 ohm resistors. Does anyone have pictures of fans modified this way? I'm looking for actual photographs, not diagrams, as I'm not an electrician.

Have you set the AAM to 128? Yes, but this only seems to affect the sharp seek noises, and I'm talking about motor noise. I have no problem with a little seek noise when I'm doing heavy drive access, but the constant hum is what gets to me. The drive also seems to have no problem with vibration (st...

Well, after reinstalling with the new drive, it's really not that quiet at all. Maybe I was expecting complete silence after reading the reviews, but motor noise is easily audible at a meter or two away as kind of a white noise "presence". All the effort of installing silent fans and larger heatsink...

Not really. But I bought the 5000AAKS anyway, so I guess I'll report back in a week.

WD5000KS vs WD5000AAKS

Has anyone tested this new revision of the 5000KS as far as noise is concerned? The hard drive review section of SPR hasn't been updated since last June, and a new drive is the only thing standing in the way of a completely silent computer for me. I'm looking to buy either one of these drives in the...

Horizontal Case Fans?

I want to remove the stock fan and shroud from my video card and mount a case fan directly below it, blowing up. However the Yate Loon 120mm case fans I have will fail if mounted horizontally. What quiet fans exist that can run horizontally, and does anyone cool their card this way?

Update: putting the 120mm case fan back on the cpu, but blowing down instead of up made quite a large difference. The heat sink has an open design so it allows the fan to blow down onto the ram and northbridge areas. The difference is apparent as system zone 1 and zone 2 both dropped by 30F each. Ho...

Poor results with SI-120 - running hot

I installed my new Thermalright SI-120 this weekend on a P4 3.2c (northwood). The previous setup was a stock intel HSF with a single case fan. Before the swap, the CPU was running at 105F at idle and about 120F under load. After swapping everything into an Antec P150 and installing the SI-120, the c...

Run CPU fan from mobo or PSU?

I've got an intel 865 series motherboard (socket 478) with the stock HSF. The CPU fan is plugged into the default spot next to the chip, and the motherboard varies the speed of the fan depending on the amount of heat in the system (I can hear it spin way up during games). When I replace the stock HS...

Ok, so I'll grab one of these Nexus/Yate Loon fans since they seem to be the same thing (Yate Loon is a higher rpm version?) and an 80mm heatsink. Those 120mm heat sinks look great but I doubt they can fit in my case.

I've got an Antec P150 case with an intel 865 series mobo. The heatsink section of the site was a good read, but I found the fan section confusing (doesn't seem to differentiate between case and CPU fans?).. and I'm concerned with finding a good quiet CPU fan.

Aftermarket fan with stock heatsink?

I have a socket 478 3.2c P4 with the stock HSF. The system runs at an acceptable temperature (40C) but the fan is insanely loud. Is it possible to replace just the CPU fan? I'm looking for the quietest possible fan without causing the processor to overheat. The CPU cooling section of the site is int...
