Re: Looking for a new quiet tower case

Bummer about the PSU. You can get the Corsair RM550x or the Seasonic Focus Plus 550 for £75-80. How much longer do you plan to hold onto the HD 6950 gfx card? 200W TDP and less performance than the 75W GTX 1050... The EVGA G2 is still under warranty for another 7 years or so, so if the replacement ...

Re: Looking for a new quiet tower case

Do you want to replace the case fans because they are too noisy? or not providing enough airflow @ the min speed? How much do you want to spend per fan? The range is ~10-25 pounds. Also, pretty sure the R5 stock fans are DC controlled only. probably went to max rpm when you tried with PWM. Yeah, th...

Re: Looking for a new quiet tower case

I've got my R5 all setup now with my new EVGA 1070ti and my new (RMA replacement) EVGA G2 750W and it's pretty damn quiet, even with two HDDs and many times quieter than my old Coolermaster HAF XB EVO. Obviously that case wasn't designed to keep noise in as it's largely open mesh but even so I'm sur...

Re: Looking for a new quiet tower case

Has anyone used the R5 and can recommend it as a quiet case? It was reviewed by SPCR on Quiet ATX Gamer, R5 Version , its a really solid case, i built on the R6 and its great case also, its more a matter of preference, either way they will be R7 on a year or two, with improvements, there is no perf...

Re: Looking for a new quiet tower case

I've seen some user reviews that have put me off the R6 somewhat. R6 Cons: Riveted PSU Shroud (having experienced the KL07 one, it just makes life harder when building and I don't really see much point in the shroud on non-windowed cases. HDD shroud also seems that it would just get in the way and p...

Re: Looking for a new quiet tower case

I think the Define R6 is worth the extra money, but it really depends on each needs. Incidentally that was one of things I liked about my HAF XB case, having the PSU and HDDs on a separate layer to the motherboard to keep their heat away from the MB/CPU/GPU. What about the Meshify C, it will have t...

Re: Looking for a new quiet tower case

...My EVGA 750 G2 PSU is 180mm long, so it might fit but I'm not sure how much drive cage space I'd have to sacrifice. You can reposition the drive cage horizontally so, according to Silverstone, a PSU between 140 to 200mm long will fit. OK, looking at this review it seems the default position for ...

Re: Looking for a new quiet tower case

Thanks, that looks like a nice case. Have you used it yourself? The KL07 is more limited space-wise than the Fractal Define R6, with Max CPU at 163mm (with the wavy foam on the side panel) or 172mm (without the foam), compared to the R6's 185mm (I made a typo in my previous post and meant 7", not 7c...

Looking for a new quiet tower case

I need to get a new case to build a spare PC after I gave my old one to my Mum when her PC died. It wasn't worth the effort of moving all the components over to her old case, so I just gave her the whole unit. I've currently got my PC in a Cooler Master HAF XB EVO case, which I was really excited to...

Re: Motherboard not showing new fan's RPM

It does need to be plugged into the PST connector, or the last PST connector in the chain if several are connected together. You should definitely not use one of the other motherboard fan headers. The advice to do the latter was incorrect. The motherboard CPU PWM fan header needs a speed signal as ...

Re: Motherboard not showing new fan's RPM

The last time I used one of these, which was some time back, I found that the Arctic fan had a separate yellow cable for RPM sensing. This had to be plugged into the end of the PST fitting on the fan cable to feed a speed signal into the motherboard. From what I remember not doing this caused exact...

Re: Motherboard not showing new fan's RPM

Have you tried the CPU_OPT? or another header? maybe the CPU_FAN failed? Have you installed AI Suite / FanXpert2 to see if you still cant see the rpm or control it? Asus mobos also have switchable headers, now a days all headers are switchable, but on yours, the CPU_FAN is switchable, enter the bio...

Motherboard not showing new fan's RPM

It seems my Scythe CPU fan (SY1225HB12SM-P) broke this evening, as I noticed it was very loud and when I checked it was running at full 1550RPM. I checked in the BIOS and the settings were as they should be but for some reason the fan was running at full speed regardless. Luckily I have a few Arctic...

Re: AMD RX 480 reference card

Also, feel free to contact Arctic about any of their proucts. They'll help, and do it fast. YMMV: I've asked them in the past about FirePro and GTX 750Ti S1 Plus/S3 compatibility and they were of no help at all. Likewise when I asked about the 6950, all they would say is that their products are onl...

Re: AMD RX 480 reference card

the 8-pin connector on non-reference cards makes that the only card to buy. I cannot imagine having to worry about my whole computer going on fire because of a power draw that exceeds 75 watts at the board. I do not trust the longevity of my system either, even though it was patched this week. if 8...

Re: AMD RX 480 reference card

The Arctic website shows the S3 is compatible with the RX480, as long as it's actively cooled. They only guarantee their coolers will fit on reference cards however, which is fine if the display output arrangement suits you. I'd probably be OK with it, as my two monitors both support DP and I only n...

Re: Cooling issues with Kotetsu

I've tweaked the fans to let the 140mm intake run at full speed (750 RPM) as that's pretty quiet, the exhaust 120mm at 460RPM and the CPU fan at 650RPM. Under load, the last two increase to about 750RPM and 950RPM respectively, which is a lot quieter than it was before. Especially the CPU fan gets n...

Thanks. I knew it wasn't dangerous at the moment, just worried that reducing the fan speed could push it above 70c but if even that is OK then I'll try tweaking it. I think the BIOS fan profiles let me set the temp/RPM for three different points so I can probably get where I want without installing ...

Cooling issues with Kotetsu

I've got a Scythe Kotetsu on my i5-4670k overclocked to 4.4Ghz@1.265v. The case is a Cooler Master XB Evo which is very well ventilated. http://www.coolermaster.com/case/lan-box-haf-series/haf-xb-evo/ It idles at around 39-43c with the Scythe CPU fan around 930RPM, the rear exhaust fan at about 900R...

Re: Fan noise annoyance

Probably the best fans I've used in terms of noise are the Artic PWM and they're very reasonably priced as well. They're not the best for cooling but I think they're good enough: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002QVLBM2?*Version*=1&*entries*=0 I too found the Scythe fans (both Scythe 120mm SY12...

Re: Looking for quiet drive that will spindown when unused

why are so concerned with head parking? its not like its a bad thing. if the head is not being used, park it. I'm not really, it's just the WD website seemed to say the Reds constantly spin and as far as I could tell, that was the main difference between them and the Greens, which had the problem w...

Re: Looking for quiet drive that will spindown when unused

I came across this which suggests that even the Reds still park the heads, although maybe not as aggressively as the Greens, so their blurb that says they stay spinning constantly seems to be somewhat misleading and maybe there's not that much difference between them. http://support.wdc.com/product/...

Re: Looking for quiet drive that will spindown when unused

i personally dont use more than 1 mechanical on my PCs (except the server), unless to do backups, so i would recommend a single WD red that covers all your storage needs, there are 4tb and 6tb versions now, and as big of an SSD as you can, Crucial MX100 is a very good drive, specially for the price...

Re: Looking for quiet drive that will spindown when unused

All drives can be spun down. Some 2.5" HDDs do it on their own apparently but most spin until the OS says otherwise. The WD Greens do the head park thing which some think are annoying but the WD Red don't do that. Both models can be told by the OS to spin down though. In my server I have four Reds,...

Looking for quiet drive that will spindown when unused

My Samsung HD204UI is giving up the ghost, so I'm looking for a 2TB or 3TB replacement. 3TB seems to be the best price point at the moment but if they're a lot noisier or less reliable than the 2TB drives, I'd probably go for the latter. I've currently got a 2TB WD Green and a Samsung Evo 256GB SSD....

Re: Cooler for overclocked i5 4670k

Check the article, it's only at the 12dB level that the CM performance collapse: otherwise the difference is around 3°C (in my quick shoot-out I had a difference of 5°C with the fan under 700rpm). Well with the two different stock fans maybe but with the same reference fan, at 12v (17dBA), 9v (14 d...

Turned out the Noiseblocker box actually had the Yate Loon 140mm in it with a small two-pin connector (too small for a motherboard header) and an adapter to convert it to Molex. I could probably wire up a suitable connector to it sometime but for now I've just put the Scythe 120mm SY1225SL12M in the...

Re: Cooler for overclocked i5 4670k

I just got round to building my i5-4670k system with the Kotetsu yesterday. For some reason, the BIOS h...
