I ran a server in the past, but it wasn't anywhere near efficient. The high to run was one reason I shut it down.

For 24/7 you want ECC. The only cheap way to do this is AMD.

Get an ASUS board. They seem to support ECC (but check the specs before you buy).

I don't think there is such a thing. If you want a quiet power supply, switch to a tower case.

The reason those power supplies are so noisy is because the fans are so small they have to spin very fast to make up.

Ugh . . . what I really meant to say was . . . "apache and postfix". Another thing I forgot. I need at least three LAN ports (or 2 LAN and one wireless) so I can put the server in a DMZ.

Sleeve or Ball Bearing?

I'm building a case with a single intake fan on the bottom. Thinking about using a 140mm Yate Loon. Now the question. Do I want a sleeve or ball bearing? I seem to recall it matters when the fan is going to be horizontal, but I forget the answer. Thanks.

Does the Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 support ECC? I can't tell from the web site. Can someone who's got one chime in?

The server will be running mail and postfix. The firewall will have its own motherboard/cpu/storage/etc. Whether I put them in the same case or not is still up in the air. GigE would be nice.

Firewall and server, which mobo?

Hi all,

I'm building a firewall and a server. The firewall will boot from a CF disk. The server will boot from a pair of Western Digital RE2-GPs (RAID 1). Which motherboard/cpu/power supply should I use? I am running these out of my house and would like to keep power consumption low.

Hey folks,

Haven't seen anyone comment on this, but this board has a serious problem for those who wants to go fanless. There are four chips soldered on the back right where the backplate is suppose to go. You can forget about putting that nice, shiny tower heatsink on this one.

I am convinced for a positive pressure case that this is pretty close to optimal.

Just slap a fan on it and you are done.

Read the review. Doesn't looke like the problem with the mounting bracket is entirely solved. The heatsink can be moved, even when mounted.

The hole spacing *is* different, of that I am well aware. :x

I was just wondering if anyone had heard of someone modding a 775 heatsink to work with socket 771, and if not, what would be the nearest equivalent.

Re: Integrated or discrete graphics?

Huh? :?: Unless the motherboard doesn't come with a PCI-E x16 or AGP slot, you should be able to add a video card. Of course I can buy a card, but this is SPCR. An unnecessary expansion card is an unnecessary obstruction to airflow. Anyhow, I was just thinking that if I could find a motherboard wit...

I just need 2D video for a server I am building. Is integrated video going to negatively impact performance? Should I go discrete? If discrete, are there any motherboards that do this? What card do you suggest?

After pouring over the reviews, I am slowly coming to a decision on my list of components. The one thing I cannot figure out is memory. There are just too many different ratings.
