Re: Fan curve/settings questions

Thanks, @Abula. Few follow ups: some here stop totally fans and have them start at certain temps, others like me like to have the fans as high as i can without being audible with my ambient to avoid the temp spikes that usual light load gives so they dont ramp up and down (breathing effect) but this...

Fan curve/settings questions

Hi all, got a few questions about setting fan curves etc. This is for the system I built this year, following this community's excellent advice. See http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=69951 This thing is pretty dang quiet at idle, but I'm trying to make it a little more so. Th...

Re: noise and cooling w/ fan adapter

Never mind. Just tried to remove the fan to see if I could get a good look at the mounting holes, to make sure the bracket would fit. And I failed to get the fan off of there. Odd-sized screws torqued down tight, partially covered by a fan shroud. Screws were gonna strip before coming out of there. ...

noise and cooling w/ fan adapter

Quick question: anyone have experience/opinions about using a fan adapter for a CPU cooler fan? Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Nexus-80mm-92mm-120mm-Converter/dp/B002C7IQ1O Wondering a) if the funnel shape will cause more wind noise, and b) if the separation between fan and heatsink is ...

Re: Noctua PWM fan low-frequency hum

The lower fan curve on the Noctua definitely helped. Thanks, all!

Decided to get a smaller NVME SSD (960 EVO) to start, for OS and heavily used programs. Will likely still add a larger SATA later when I start needing more storage. But hoping prices fall a bit before buying.

Re: Noctua PWM fan low-frequency hum

Also, as long as I'm asking about the Palit: in my mobo the GPU is directly on top of the M.2 slot, where my primary SSD resides. Do I need to worry at all about the GPU getting hot enough that it has adverse effects on the SSD?

Re: Noctua PWM fan low-frequency hum

Thanks, will try that. Can either of you give me an idea of how hot I can let the Palit get without concern? Did a bit of non-graphically-intensive gaming yesterday and per HWMonitor the GPU temp was mostly in the 50s celcius, with a few spikes into the low 60s. (And that was with a single front int...

Noctua PWM fan low-frequency hum

Just built a new system, which is described in this thread: http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=69951&p=607271#p607271 I ended up adding a Noctua NF-A14 PWM fan as a 2nd (lower) case fan, to blow more air over the Palit fanless GPU. This is supposed to be a very quiet fan. I fo...

Re: School me on work/light gaming build

What do folks think of this Shadow Rock line from Be Quiet? New Egg has Shadow Rock LP (low profile) for a little less than the Mugen. Have plenty of room in the case, but I guess smaller can't hurt. Might be easier to install? It's Rated at 130W TDP and my chip is 65W TDP. Does that provide enough ...

Re: School me on work/light gaming build

Just got the system assembled and working. Bought the Palit card from England. Shipped in 3 days for $30 and wasn't really more than inflated prices for louder cards here ATM. For those keeping score at home: * stock fans on the Fractal case: pretty quiet * stock CPU cooler for the Ryzen 3: not so m...

Re: School me on work/light gaming build

Neither the Palit nor the Gigabyte G1 nor the Asus Strix seem to be in stock anywhere in the US. Both seem to be available only through one German site (grooves.land) which seems to have a spotty track record. Many stores say out of stock, others say "call for availability" which I assume means out ...

Re: School me on work/light gaming build

Also @CA_Steve, re the case fans, a few additional questions for you: * Is it OK to mix voltage-controlled and PWM fans in the case if they're on separate headers? Gonna try the stock Fractal fans like you suggest, but leaning toward getting at least one additional fan for extra airflow on the GPU. ...

Re: School me on work/light gaming build

Thanks for the advice, everyone. Have been considering two pieces of advice in particular: "try the stock AMD cooler because the Mugen is overkill" and "get a Be Quiet PSU instead of the Seasonic". While both these seem reasonable, I am thinking of sticking w/ both the Mugen and the Seasonic. Here's...

Re: School me on work/light gaming build

Oh, one other thing. re the suggestions to try the stock CPU cooler. Isn't it harder to swap out a cooler than to install the first one? Don't you have to clean thermal paste off the CPU or something if you want to swap it?

Re: School me on work/light gaming build

Also, do I need to worry about quantity of fan connectors on the mobo? I notice that the build walle linked to (thanks for that!) looks like it has 6 case fans installed. The mobo specs say it has: - 1 x 4-pin CPU fan connector - 1 x 4-pin water-pump-fan connector - 4 x 4-pin system fan connectors D...

Re: School me on work/light gaming build

Thanks, all! Appreciate the help! Few follow-up questions: @CA_Steve, unfortunately it's hard for me to evaluate mobo quality. I'll look into NIC differences. School me on work/light gaming build

Hi all, coming back around to this site for the first time in like 7 or 8 years (which is how old my current setup is.) Time for it to go, and start completely fresh. Hi, just checking in on whether you finished your build and if you're happy with it. Quiet enough? Considering a similarly-focused build and wondering if you'd do anything differently. Thanks!

high-pitched click/squeak (coil whine??)

i'm experiencing a somewhat-quiet but high-pitched (and therefore annoying) squeak/click noise from somewhere in the vicinity of my motherboard/CPU/PSU. OK, I can try the foam thing. It really seems like the low-pitched noise is vibrating through the case while the high-pitched noise isn't, but what do I know? BTW, I have an Antec case with rubber grommets for the drive cage screws, so it should be somewhat insulated from vibrations already. Obvious...

difference between samsung HD321KJ and HD501LJ?

Is there any tech/performance/noise difference between these two drives? Or is it only a matter of size?

(320GB is plenty for me, so i'll go w/ the smaller unless there's a compelling reason to go w/ the larger)

Thanks!

installing PSU 20/24 pin power connector

Please forgive the noob question in advance I just purchased and received a Seasonic S-12 380 on the recommendation of this fine community. My mobo has a 20-pin main connector, and the PSU has a "20/24" pin connector. As I understand things, this isn't a problem, but I realize I don't know exactly h...
