It ought to be fairly easy to put the fan on the top blowing down on the card with some spacers, like some kind of rubber or foam, or simply use another fan with struts. That way the VRM's should also benefit from the cooler air from the fan.

I don't know how hot it gets in Australia but it does seem a bit overkill with all those fans, and probably unnecessary. Also, i wouldn't use silicone for closing different vents in the case. Just some cardboard and duct tape should be more than sufficient and much easier to remove if the need be. G...

The plan of moving your system to a new case and PSU seems very attractive, IMO, from what you describe about your current system. That would be my first priority, if i was in your situation. Alternatively, you could start with a new PSU and access the situation from there. Corsair are nice and quit...

In short, no. If you need to replace the drives it would be more logical to replace them with technologically newer drives. More data density, fewer plates. I would recommend detaching the WD's from the case in some way for now, rubber bands or a bed of foam, soft material, whatever you can think up...

Building DAW's are never cheap. If it has been 8 years since your last build and more than a couple of years since your last DAW purchase i guess you will be surprised at how much silence you get these days for your money right out of the box, if you're just a little careful choosing the components....

Nice! :D

I'm only just a little bit envious.

Those drives are still too expensive for me justify upgrading my OS disk.

I'll hold back for now waiting for cheaper, better even faster SATA3 SSD drives.

I can't compare the Green WD drives to any notebook drives as i don't have any of those except the old one in my laptop, nor can i tell anything about the power draw but i can tell that the WD15EARS, the 1.5TB 64MB cache kind, that i put in my main rig the other day is significantly quieter than the...

Which is the quietest > 1TB drive today?

What do we buy these days regarding big storage drives?
WD, Samsung or Seagate?

I just can't sort through all the information.

Please advise me.

Ok, welcome back then. Mobo/HS : I have an Asus P5Q-E with passive heatpipe cooling of the northbridge and the VRMs. On this board i use a Noctua NH-C12P, a topdown HS which i like because it is cooling the passive northbridge and VRMs too. It's very much on the expensive side though but well worth ...

Welcome to SPCR Well, first of all if you don't mind noise and noisy fans/components you're probably asking the wrong people, as that is what most, if not all of us, primarily care about. However there is a lot of common ground between us PC users anyway, regardless if we use them for gaming, foldin...

... does a standard ATX PSU now get *less* air intake ... than in a P180/182? Considering that most PSUs have one fan and it's positioned on the bottom of PSU... It gets substantially more air than before by mounting it with the fan up (which is how I'd mount it in a P182 as well, to store excess c...

The p183 would be a boring case if it didn't need any modification. Thanks to Antec for providing the community with yet another splendid case that needs just a little bit of tweaking to accomodate the feinschmeckers amongst us. On another note, is the CP-850 quiet and is it +80 approved? It would h...

I'm contemplating getting a OCZ Vertex drive as i've heard/read that they should be very suited for a primary drive but i'm far from done researching SSDs yet.

Will your old PSU support the new mobo ? I'm asking because as i have understood your system specs, your PSU is 7-8 years old. It might be a good idea to get a more efficient one,if that is indeed the case and maybe your old PSU doesn't have all the necessary connections for the new mobo either. Jus...

Have you tried reseating the gfx cooler making sure it has good connection with the RAM and VRMs ?
You might need some new thermal pads to assure good connection between the sink and the components.

I'm guessing that you will need a slow fan on the CPU cooler to get those temps down. The Ati 4870 runs pretty hot and although you get nice temps, for an 4870, with the cooling you've got now, it is probably the heat from the gfx card that heats up your RAM and VRMs so much, at least that would be ...

An ordinary blue drive doesn't really whine at all but there is some vibration. The blue drives are very easy to quiet down in a P182, especially if you only have 1 or 2 drives. I don't think the green drives are fast enough to use as game drives if you play some of the newest games like Crysis 2 an...

I would say the P182 is definitely worth it and it is not really expensive compared to other cases of the same quality, size and air managebility. (sp?)

I wonder though, why you would use a green drive for a gaming rig?
They are supposed to be somewhat slower than blue drives.

For a really low budget modification, I.E. at no cost, you could pull the PSU from the box and place it outside the box. That would probably help with the heat problem quite a bit. Furthermore you could take advantage of natural convection and place the PC in such a way that the heat from the CPU hs...

Hi and Welcome to SPCR I don't know how loud the Dell Inspiron is but the system you plan on building will definitely have the potential to be very quiet right out of the box. I would advice you to get a 4650 instead of the 3650 just because it is a newer card and the price difference is diminutive....
