Re: Desperate quest for a silent 2.5" HDD

Or is the problem that they are all to avoid and there isn't any good recent ones? I think the main problem is the lack of competition. Seagate has bought Samsung and WD has bought Hitachi. So the two companies who have been bought out are probably not doing any more research and development. And t...

i've seen another forum member get their x2 250 to 0.67v idle but i think that's the limit, i could probably go lower but i don't want to bother with k10stat, i just use the bios and cnq. That was me. :D 0.675V @ 800Mhz in K10stat, but CPU-Z shows 0.688V. I also have a Sempron 140 and the lowest I ...

Re: 3TB secondary drives with 32bit OS?

Am I right in thinking that a 3TB drive, when used as a secondary, non-boot drive will still work in a 32bit OS, such as XP Pro? Or would I need to use that little doohickey WD included with the 3TB drive? http://www.hitachigst.com/images/stories/high_capacity_tablev2.jpg From what I've read, 32-bi...

Samsung has finally posted an Advanced Format Alignment Tool for their hard drives for those people using XP/2003 without access to Vista/Win7 machines to do the partitioning or don't want to use command line to create partitions with the proper offset.

Re: WD 3200AAKS which are single-platter?

SleepyBum, the WD 3200aaks is a 3.5" drive. Oopppss... You are right... For some reason I thought he was talking about 2.5" laptop HDs, because they have just recently made the transition to 320GB platters. Yes, a 320GB desktop HD is probably based on 320GB or 500GB platters. 6667GB platters have r...

Re: Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 (3TB)

According to Storage Review, it is a 5 platter drive. 600GB platters would make for weird configuration for the 2TB and 1.5TB models. 3.5 * 600GB = 2100GB 2.5 * 600GB = 1500GB Would be a waste to be using like 3-platters and 5-heads, unless they have a lot of bad platters. Or they could be using 50...

Are you going to use this drive for the OS/boot or just a data drive to store media? I think 5400rpm is fine for as a HTPC boot drive, if all you intend to do is to just boot, load up the media player, and play back videos. But if you want to use it beyond that, like playing games, running programs,...

The other specs that can show the number platters are weight and power usage. More platters = more weight...
