Re: Linux-compatible motherboard, cool CPU - recommendations

If anyone's opinion is likely to be relevant, it's going to be the opinion of the authors of that software. Aaaah now that is a very good idea which had not occurred to me at all. Thanks! In general, the "let's pay more and keep my gear longer" idea doesn't make sense, especially if you want to avo...

Replacement ATX PSU for old Mac - recommendations?

Hi people Well the PC I built in 2007 with advice from people here is still running like a dream, now primarily on Ubuntu Lucid Lynx - four years of lovely quietness and counting, touch wood :-) Meanwhile I've also quietened down my old G3 "beige" Mac, by suspending some 2.5" drives in elastic and r...

CPU warranty says own heatsink only - what would you do?

Hello all Just got the bits for my new quiet system and have been quietly perusing the manuals and suchlike. I was a bit put out to see that the warranty for the CPU (AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600 AM2 1.9GHz) will be void if I put a different heat sink on it, which is of course exactly what I was planning t...

Hello all So I ordered the stuff (except the Nexus fan which wasn't coming from the same supplier - I will start off with the original case fan for now) and the last bits arrived today! Mostly the list is what I said in the post at the top of this thread, but I did find a 3600+ Brisbane CPU, and als...

taidi wrote: You can get the board, cpu and memory all from Ebuyer. Aah, missed that. Thanks... but... I think I stopped looking at them after reading this page: http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Ebuyer_UK which I must admit has thoroughly put me off them, seeing as the point of aiming to get the...

re qviri's comments on CPUs: have sent scan an email-type message to say could they fix their page. meanwhile that item has gone out of stock for now anyway. The Brisbane 3600+ dual-core (code ADO3600DDBOX) does sound like a better idea on the face of it. I hadn't twigged that there were all these d...

Hello again all, As I'm now at the "shopping list" stage, I've jumped thread to over here: http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=337770#337770 Thanks to everyone who's added posts in the last few days, and thanks again for the first lot. I do feel like I'm beginning to get my bearings...

Provisional shopping list, q about fan for Ninja, etc

Hello all Following on from an earlier thread in the motherboards section, here: http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=39508 ... I now have a provisional list of bits. Criteria for the machine , briefly: 1. Preferably inaudible to me - daytime I have traffic noise, but if I get up ear...

I don't think Dragon Naturally Speaking is available for Linux, unless you can get it working in wine. No you're right, that would be running on an old Win98 which I've got to keep around for legacy reasons. (I'm actually thinking of having one Win98 as a dual boot with Linux and one on top of VMwa...

Hello all First a couple of clarifications/elaborations arising from my original post. One thing I didn't mention is the use of Dragon Naturally Speaking. It's not top of my list of important things, because in practice I rarely use it. But part of the reason I don't often use it at the moment is th...

Thanks everyone for the info - lots of useful clues there.

Haven't had a chance to follow it all up yet (unexpected work this week) so just thought I'd say an interim thanks to be going on with :-)

more later...

Possible motherboards/CPUs for a Linux system

Hello all, I've been reading this board on and off for a year or two now, but this is my first post. I'm currently planning my first venture into quiet-PC-building. I had been thinking the new machine could be based around the Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 and Asus P5B-Deluxe, and run WinXP. But then I cha...
