Re: My Quad-Monitor Rackmount PC and HTPC!

The magic mouse is okay in Windows 7, but the scrolling is jerkier than in OS X and it doesn't support multi-touch gestures.

Re: My Quad-Monitor Rackmount PC and HTPC!

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I took some power measurements for the HTPC with a Kill-A-Watt. Idle figures taken on Windows desktop. Load figures taken running Prime95. With Seasonic 250W microATX PSU: Idle - 48 W Load - 74 W With PicoPSU-90 and FSP 75W AC/DC adapter: Idle - 33 W Load - 61 W These f...

Re: My Quad-Monitor Rackmount PC and HTPC!

Thanks. It's an Orion FS1 Free Standing Cabinet
http://www.rackcabinets.co.uk
It's 12u, 600mm depth.

The stock fan on the Core-i3 is very good and I never hear it. In contrast, the stock fan on the Core-i5 was rubbish and I replaced it straightaway. The Dell switch is fanless.

Re: My Quad-Monitor Rackmount PC and HTPC!

Thanks. Yeah, it's quite loud but it's mainly for movies so the sound mostly drowns it out. It's 720p.

My Quad-Monitor Rackmount PC and HTPC!

4 years ago, I posted a thread about my Tri-Monitor Rackmount PC . Somehow it managed find its way onto the front page of Digg and ended up with 340,000 page views! I decided recently to upgrade both my desktop PC and my Home Theatre PC to Sandy Bridge, so thought I'd post some photos and stuff here...

Re: Low power multi-monitor graphics card(s)

Thanks all for the great advice. I fitted two Sapphire HD6450 512MB DDR3 (passive) cards today. Just did some quick tests and they are using about 15 watts less on idle than my two Nvidia 7600GT cards. Only slight annoyance is that they have DVI and HDMI ports very close together, so an HDMI to DVI ...

Low power multi-monitor graphics card(s)

Can anyone recommend a graphics card for my desktop PC? I need to drive 3 DVI (single link) monitors and an HDMI projector. I'm currently using two 7600GT cards, but having just upgraded to Sandy Bridge, I'd like something more modern. I don't play games much, but need good de-interlacing performanc...

You could have used a USB flash drive instead AND could have installed Windows if you wanted to (linux is better anyway). I'm not critical of this setup, just wanted to know. Good point - I didn't consider a USB flash drive. I'm not sure whether it would be as fast though. I don't need Window...

Mojo, I wasn't impressed with the VIA board at all. At first, it crashed constantly in X and I rebuilt the kernel about a million times with various patches trying to solve it. I have a friend who bought a Jetway board with the same chipset and that had the same problem. I get 30MB/sec from it where...

Thanks all. There's no ducting - I've removed the back door of the cabinet for ventilation and cable access, and that's it. It doesn't run particularly hot. I have the video cards connected in SLI, but I hardly ever use them in SLI. I don't play games much nowadays. Ebay is good for old rackmount eq...

Yes. I normally run in non-SLI mode using all three monitors. The SLI bridge remains connected.

When I want to run an SLI game (hardly ever), I just go into the Nvidia control panel, enable SLI and then reboot. In SLI mode, I only get a picture on the centre monitor.

Thanks Rick. Haven't done exhaustive tests, but CPU temp up to about 60 deg C, GPU up to about 80 deg C (both much lower at idle). Can't remember temp of VIA CPU, but it's so low power it doesn't need active cooling. I had about 100 days uptime until I installed a patch and needed to reboot! The blu...

Heatpipe kits to use case as large heatsink?

I'm currently working out which components to buy for an upgrade of my HTPC. I plan to use as much passive cooling as possible, but the case I have is very limited in space. It's a very substantial aluminium case (sides are 7mm thick) so I thought it might be ideal to use the case itself as a heatsi...

Thanks Jay. Yeah, the bottom of the cabinet is open, and it's on castors so there's plenty of airflow from the bottom.

I've removed the back door of the cabinet as it makes cable access a lot easier and you can't tell when it's against a wall.

Re: My Tri-Monitor Rackmount Computer Build!

Very nice setup! Just one thing I am wondering about... suspended with bungee cord in the 1u case. How!?! Do you have any pics of that? I didn't have any pics but I just took some, as it's quite easy to pull out the individual machines now :) There's hardly any room (1U is 1.75 inches) to suspend a...

It could be. I bought it from Ikea years ago. I'd quite like a desk with a glass top next. Mind you, drilling a hole in it would probably be out.

My Tri-Monitor Rackmount Computer Build!

Now updated, May 2011 - My Quad-Monitor Rackmount PC and HTPC! I recently had a massive ebay sale of all my old computer and hi-fi junk and decided to build my ultimate PC from scratch. It's taken a slow, but rewarding, 3 months to buy all the bits required and complete it all. My requirements were...

Here's the case I'm after. I think it should have good airflow, although the fan is only 120mm at the front. http://www.xcase.co.uk/p/289404/compucase-s400-short-4u-rackmount---430mm-deep-no-psu.html I'm mainly concerned that the PSU won't be sufficient for SLI. People seem to run hugely powerful PS...
