Re: Ooooooh, shiny new forum!
Huh, came back due to an email notification and the forum had transformed overnight. Never did see that new message, as the database is missing about day's worth of data too. Odd that the control panel doesn't offer us any themes; don't they usually? Having the poster info on the right-hand side of ...

I used 1.5 meters of clothing elastic to suspend a 1 TB Samsung Spinpoint F1 in my Antec NSK3480 . The elastic runs twice around the SQD through loops I fashioned from plastic strips cut from some packaging material. They were made by cutting holes in their ends, making a loop and then screwing them...

The thing with SSDs is that they have extremely fast, nearly non-existent seek times. The rest depends on the controller design and here's where the differences between manufacturers come up. Marketing types like to boast as high numbers as possible so many an SSD could be, and have been, designed t...

Point is you can't easily upgrade it. It is extremely easy to upgrade the miniPCI express SSDs found in Dell Minis and the Asus Eee PCs. Suitable RunCore SSDs are sold by www.mydigitaldiscount.com and www.memoryc.com and they can even be connected as USB drives for easy cloning before the swap, whi...

Very well done! When I did my NSK3480 a year ago I didn't have the time or tools for that kind of cutting... I've been planning exactly this, of course, but the system works just fine so taking it down for some 'body work' isn't exactly a top priority. Should have done it right away. All you need no...

I have the impression that the chipset actually runs a lot hotter than the Atom CPU. Too bad they don't have an equally frugal chipset to pair with an Atom in nettops and netbooks. There's of course Poulsbo, but isn't that mostly paired with the lower-power Silverthorne? Poulsbo's driver support is ...

Here's a video showing the Eee 901 playing 1080p video. (It was a response to a video from VIA comparing one of their processors to the Atom, and they had the Atom mistakenly running a bit slower than it should have been.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVf3PtNF-j0 It's the Robotica clip (1080p) fro...

My guess is the price will drop quickly -- like it always does -- to below $300. To me it's far more desirable than the Eee PC whose screen and keyboard are laughable. The screen was indeed too small on the original Eee PC. All of the newer models have 8.9" or 10" screens though and they are very c...

That 900 does not have Atom, it's the second revision of the 900 with only one 16GB SSD drive. It's like the first 12GB/20GB model but with no faster and smaller 4GB primary drive. The 900 with Atom is the Eee 900A . Amazon still doesn't seem to carry it... I've had mine for a week now; imported it ...

No. Unless the application being used to decode was multithreaded, you'll notice no difference to performance in that regard. As far as I know, CoreAVC is the only multithreaded decoder. That's part of the reason it's the fastest. The Atom's Hyper-threading might already be of some help with it as ...

I was surprised that it couldn't do 1080p. People have reported the Eee 901 (with an Intel Diamondville N270) is up for the task - at least with a good decoder and when the power profile is correct - on power save (800 MHz) it skips, but on "high" (default, 1.6 GHz) or "super performance" (1.8 GHz) ...

Some SATA cables are of the locking kind, like the ones that came with my current Gigabyte board. They are great since they are held in place very securely. I've been using Ikea Galant (for a year or more, I forget). as per the hard drives, i think the one thing that keeps me away from Western Digital GP drives is the platter speed. its variable 5400-7200, which is why they only use on average 7W They are not variable, all reviewed GP drives have been 5400 rpm. The vagueness with the rpm was that WD reserved th...

It does make a big difference. In my case however, an EarthWatts 380 in an NSK3480, it revealed the electrical noise. It can only be heard if you listen to it up close, though, and it getting out is partly due to the vent on top of that case. How do yours sound? Stop the fans for a moment if there's...

I don't see why not. If you can construct a suitable frame for them, space shouldn't be a problem. Cabling will hamper things mor...

The NSK3480 is indeed a very nice case. I cut the vent grills from mine and I run two Nexus fans, one on the exhaust and the other on a Ninja. Is your quad of stepping G0? You're probably getting readings 15 degree Celsius too low due to the Tjunction Max being different in some of the quads. Check with CoreTemp or SpeedFan beta. Anyway, those temps are fine.

Yeah, the temperatures are still just fine. You can configure an offset in SpeedFan's Advanced tab to make it useful - select "INTEL CORE at $0 on ISA" and set a proper number to the offsets in there. An offset of 15 degrees would make sense, but just cross-check what SpeedFan and Core Temp read and...

It looks like G0 quad core has a Tjunction Max of 100C. Try CoreTemp or the latest Everest. I just have this feeling a Quad shouldn't be able to idle that cool, especially with passive cooling. That would be ten degrees better than I ever got with the E6600 with a 600 rpm fan on the Ninja. While I h...
