Ahh, sorry Mojo. I wasn't talking about your writing at all. I would be the fourth last person to complain about grammar and spelling. I meant spoken English. I was referring to the "tri-monitor rackmount computer build" in the General Gallery. He's from London, so I just made a baseless assumption ...

Ahh, so 500 quintillion? That puts a little challenge back in the game so it's not so boring. :)

I have no problem with flip-flops beachside, but when paired with urban attire (and increasingly with formal and professional attire!) and worn out and about in a city in the northern hemisphere, the overall impression of a clappity naked-footed duckwalker is not very simpatico.

That was probably caused by an allergic reaction.

Walmart flip-flops horror (chemical burn)

I don't shop at Walmart (on protectionist and snobbish grounds), and I don't like flip-flops (when women wear them, of course), but I just got this graphic link in email and thought I'd do my little part to discourage any women/girlfriends/wives from disturbing the public peace with these fashion at...

The reason I bought Vista was to upgrade to a 64-bit OS. While the platform matures, I have 32-bit XP as a fallback for applications that don't work well in Vista. How you arrange the drives depends on how many drives per system there are, and whether silence or performance is your primary aim (havi...

No offense taken. :) As I said, I used to have an 8GB partition for XP, but my needs steadily grew, as did the size of software. I just bought Office 2007 Ultimate retail (haven't installed it yet), and it lists a space requirement of 3GB on the box. Of course 20GB is perfectly manageable (or even 1...

That's why I mentioned the term "performance-oriented". :) I'm not a purebred silence enthusiast. I'm a scroungy mutt. An XP partition of 16-20GB is quite small in this day and age. And for the future? I used to use 8GB for XP, then 12GB , then 20GB (on a 300GB drive), then 30GB, then 40GB. I would ...

That's terrible news, zoob!

I guess I'm going to have to do some heat tests before I put anything valuable on these AAKS drives.

I'm wondering why these 500GB AAKS are so cheap, even cheaper than the 400GB versions. Hmmm.

Partition the Samsung and stick with one drive -- less heat, power, and noise. Smaller drive = lower areal density = faster transfer rate dropoff and higher access time compared to the same capacity at the beginning of a large drive. Why would you want an older, slower drive for the OS? If you want ...

Personally, I'd have a very tiny amount of crap in my pants if my hard drives hit the high 40s. I'm still confused by that quoted statement. When a drive is 'on', the platters spin. When the drive read/writes data, the arm/heads assembly moves into position. The drive does not spin up and down between accesses. To make the hard drive spin up and down during periods of inactivity requires setti...

40C is not low for stock speed, but more than safe. The CPU temp reported by PC Probe is the 'tCase' reading. The core/internal diode reading is 'tJunction', which is typically 15C higher. Use the Intel Thermal Analysis Tool (TAT) to measure the core temperatures, and to test for worst-case temperat...
