Re: Switching from Antec Solo to P183 v3

the intake fans have sort of a fan sleeve that clips to the case. they are sorta tricky to take out unless you know the trick, you have to bend the big piece of plastic a bit.

i broke one on my P180 a long time ago :) learn from my mistakes.

Re: advice on i3 gaming small rig

Looks very nice. If you're looking for PSU recommendations, I'd suggest Antec Earthwatts supplies, or Seasonic Supplies. Antec 380w routinely runs $40 in the US and shouldn't have any problems powering said system. If you're sticking with air cooling for the video card I find that most dual slot sto...

Re: i3 2100 web server PSU

I've built an SB system with a 60W PSU. Picos are very good but I used the case's fanless PSU to save money. I also did not go with a DH61AG for the same reason. 80+ 300W PSUs are a lot less efficient than a pico because you don't get 80+ at low load! Only platinum-rated mainstream PSUs compete wit...

You need to get it booted into an OS with power saving features enabled, and look at your killawatt. You might be pleasantly suprised.

Re: Diagnose system not booting with ATI 5770 graphics card

If the computer will boot up without the card, but not with the card, it's absolutely 100% the power supply. No-name 350w supplies may not provide the necessary 12v amperage to run the card. Try to find that 12v amperage and let us know what it is, may be listed on the PSU. I wouldn't recommend supp...

Re: i3 2100 web server PSU

I would speculate that the pico-PSU nets you 10%+ more efficiency, but I think that you should take a look at some of the smaller, fairly inexpensive 80+ bronze supplies you can get, for example an Antec EA-380D or a Seasonic 300w Both can be had for less than $40, where as a pico-psu generally cost...

Re: Quiet 2TB HD with blended performance

the difference between 5400 and 5900 RPM drives is probably minimal. 7200RPM [and faster] will net you better access times. Hitachi makes by far the cheapest 7200RPM drives. I'm using 5 7200RPM 7K2000 [the 32mb cache version] drives, I am pretty happy with the noise. I'd speculate western digital bl...

Re: My CPU heatsink is SOO loud! Help please!

You're using the stock AMD phenom cooler.

See if you have the 4 pin connector from the cpu fan in the correct slot. Check if the motherboard has the Q-FAN feature on, as previous poster stated.

Re: Single Platter 500GB 2.5" Hard Drive?

most macs can house 12.5mm drives, i have one in my macbook pro @ 1TB.

most 2.5" drives don't produce a lot of vibration, in particular the slower spinning drives, though you lose a bit of performance.

I imagine since this is a laptop chip, a standard desktop size cooler wouldn't have much issue dealing with 44w of TDP.

Re: please critique my home ZFS build

I would agree, but unless he's moving to 10g, which seems unlikely since he said he's rolling a mac mini, you can easily saturate gigabit [~110-115MB/s after overhead] with iSCSI traffic with two disks striped.

Re: please critique my home ZFS build

Sanity wise everything looks to be in order. If anything you should consider your strategy here. If you're so concerned about the data, are you taking into account a backup routine. ZFS parity is *not* a backup. RAID is about performance and uptime. I know ZFS isn't RAID and I would agree that some ...

Might delete your other post in the gallery, this is where that thread belongs. Looks solid. Antec Solo is cheaper. Both cases are fairly quiet with the dampening. The tri-cools that come with both cases are considered mediocre among this very picky crowd here, but they are probably good enough if y...

I bought a Scythe Big Shuriken for one of these without really looking at the motherboard closely.

Of course it covered up the PCI-E slot quite well, had to use the Intel stock cooler.

Hi. This is probably a very simple question. I am shipping a computer for work to Germany from the united states. I believe I have purchased the correct power cable [CEE7] for this computer. Yes, I liked how easy it was to put the hard drives in; screw less design, you see. However once I turned on all 4 1TB blacks, the vibration dampening was inferior to the white-rubber grommets on the P180. It felt like the HDD's were flush against the plastic base of the supplied trays, so vibration...

The whole thing runs fairly warm; you can feel the heat radiating off the aluminum case. otherwise the power supply moves enough air to sort of keep the case a reasonable tmep [50c?ish].

This seems challenging, I like that. As for advice, I'd say Athlon X3 is better/cheaper than X2. You might read up a bit on unlocking cores, sometimes you can get lucky and unlock extra cores in the X3 processor lines. Just poking around the egg site, I'd say this might be something to think about, ...
