I think you need to take it apart more to check if it has the plastic sheet thing still on there:

Re: Gigabyte GA-Z87N-WIFI Haswell Mini-ITX Motherboard

I'm a bit surprised that its excellent power consumption gets a mention and it can get a "Recommended" award when the loaded power consumption is so high. The CPU socket location is very akward too. I don't think it really deserves the recommendation. The ASRock boards look like they are worth a con...

I'm still rocking a Gelid Silent Spirit: http://www.gelidsolutions.com/images/products/thumb/silent-spirit_set_288_207.gif I forcibly unbent it into a tower style after reading SPCR's Single Moving Part PC in Silverstone TJ08 . It's been decent, if unspectacular. And was low cost. But it seems to ha...

Re: Western Digital Red 3TB & 1TB Hard Drives

Regarding performance, I can't see why the 1TB is worse. Same density and same platters, right? Just 1 platter for the 1TB and 3 platters for the 3TB? From what I understand about how the SPCR performance testing was done, I think it was a bit limiting. It shows and concludes the 3TB is pretty decen...

Re: SilverStone Temjin TJ04-E Evolution Case

I'm a bit surprised at that for a green drive. I've never seen drive temperatures go very high. But maybe they did and I didn't notice. My Samsung green drive (single platter 500GB in a scythe quiet drive), seemed to take ages just to get to 30°C. Right now I've got this Maxtor 200GB 7200RPM and tha...

Re: SilverStone Temjin TJ04-E Evolution Case

The Silverstone comment links to the Google study, which is perhaps the most comprehensive and oft-referenced study on HDD temperatures and their link to reliability. The sweetspot seems to be between 37-42 °C (if I'm reading this right). I'm sure that's not the one I was thinking of or saw, but it...

Re: SilverStone Temjin TJ04-E Evolution Case

What temperature is best for peak HDD reliability? I thought it was quite high like 40*C but I can't find any references. But probably putting a heatsink and/or fan on a hard disk will make it less reliable than just letting it run really warm!

Re: be quiet! Dark Rock 2 Tower Heatsink

Just from this picture I knew it wasn't going to be very good . A lot of the airflow must flow out of the top and sides looking at that, with a bulk of the heatsink sitting there with dead air (no airflow through the middle). As for the price, you can get a Thermalright HR-02 Macho for £40 so it's ...

@MikeC - I see. But that information is not available in the SPCR Certification report PDF file. Re: SPCR Quiet Certified Gaming PC by AVADirect Custom Compu

"acoustic certification: quiet pc" seems a bit vague. Different people will have different expectations of what a "quiet PC" will be able to deliver in terms of acoustic performance. I thought something like "audible, unobtrusive, low noise" would be better. Which would be the worst acoustic perform...

I had a jetway mini itx motherboard before. Such a piece of crap I wouldn't buy from them again.

You should ask for a review sample of one of those ZOTAC barebone machines with a tiny footprint of 10x10 cm. It's rather impressive looking.

Re: Intel Core i7-3770 Ivy Bridge CPU

Higher idle power consumption with the integrated graphics than sandy bridge. Other reviews would have missed that.

Meanwhile Intel would have you believe idle power is going down thanks to memory controller power gating. Maybe laptop CPUs will not measure so badly relative to sandy bridge mobiles.

Re: Fractal Design Define Mini MicroATX Tower

The TJ08-E looses to the Fractal Design Define Mini on HDD temperatures because HDD reliability will be reduced at 25*C compared to 32*C.

I forget what the optimum temperature is but it's probably around 35-40*C.

Looks to me like the heatsink case is badly designed. Fins are too tightly packed and on the side of the case they are not even pointing the right way. That amount of extruded aluminium looks like it should be able to cool 65W of heat if done properly.

That might be true if you are a thermal engineer designing for complete precision, I would have to disagree. Considering this is SPCR, what I had in mind would be along the lines on pico PSU and external power brick. It would be helpful to know how many amps you are dealing with as there can be a l...

Lawrence has documented clearly that... Yes, yes. But it is useful to know exactly how much power you are dealing with from the CPU for cooling and PSU requirements. Measured on the 12v line to the CPU. 12W difference under load. Ok but that's system power. Can we just assume that: - A conservative...

So what is the peak power consumption of the 35W CPU? I'd like to compare it to the 65W version and max stable undervolt of maybe a quadcore mainstream part.

I like the concept a lot. The case needs reworking with some fundamental changes to be considered. It could be made shorter, loose the hole in the front for CDs, better construction, steel case, drop price a bit, fix the buttons, loose the hotswap... did I miss anything?

Re: Sandy Bridge, Part 2: Intel DH67BL & Asus P8H67-M EVO

The P8H67's BIOS offers more extensive voltage control, though it's not really useful due to the aforementioned inherent overclocking limitations of the H67 chipset. Its only real advantages are a wider range of memory controls and fully customizable control of two of the board's three fan headers....

Page 4, the 2500K idles at an impressively low 3.4W. Add a graphics card and the on die GPU gets power gated so should drop power consumption even more but instead it goes up to 4.0W. Why is that?

mattlach, I've thought about doing something like that. I think you can feed the graphics card with 12v continuously. When the PC is off, the graphics card will not be using any power. The external DELL PSU will be wasting more power that it should this way unless you can make use of that standby sw...
