Standard vcore is over 1.3V... just take it in small jumps testing with prime95 (x4) for a short wihle with each jump. When you hit problems just wind it up again and do a long prime95 test.

You will really need to replace the whole thing. Replacing just the fan may help noise levels but will probably not make any significant difference to temps. I'd have a rethink about the not taking mobo out thing - most of the best coolers are quite large and include something a bit better than just...

The x1950? It's not horrendous, but if I open the side panel it's clearly the loudest thing... not so obvious with side panel on (although that might change when I get some Scythe fans).

2.5" is still slower than 3.5" at the same RPM... to do with the fact that the platters have a smaller diameter so the speed at the end of track (spinning at 7200RPM) is slower than that of a 3.5" at the end of the track... if that makes sense.

Well as it turns out I was able to try undervolting last night - with good success. I was able to reduce to the CPU's minimum VID (short test stable only at this point, haven't run long term). Never mind, found the switch : P Will post back with results later. Oh and Q6600 B3 stock VCore 1.3125......

I've had a bit of a look... the temps are on the high side for a B3 but plenty of others reporting similar. A few reporting less and obviously the G0 does much better. So overall it's probably not an issue with the install, just a bad combination. Basically comes down to (probably in this order) - 1...

3.5 Is a big o/c on air.. I'm not sure anything is going to get you those speeds at 50c or lower. Heck, my (admittedly poor) cooling solution with B3 Q6600 idles at 46-48c, and will be a touch louder than your target 20-25DBa.

Real kicker for you... also has a couple of PCI-X meaning you've got a nice choice of cards. 2x dual PCI-X, 1x quad PCI-X, 2x dual PCI-E etc... though if you take both PCI-X then you lose your dual GPU soluti...

PCI doesn't have enough b/w to run 1 gb port at full speed, let alone 2. Hence, no PCI dual GB cards.

That side fan is largely unecessary. Look around on here for commonly recommended cases.. (Antec Solo comes to mind). If you're looking at 4x slots you'll likely need to move to a workstation grade mobo. 2x 16x slots is not going to happen if this is the case... The two chipsets that do allow full speed dual x16 are 680SLI and X38, looking at the Gigabyte boards at least, neither have a 4x connector or PCI-X. A qui...
