as a closet audiophile (and professional home theater installer) I could not agree more. stereo cabinets, and bulky equipment are just not necessary any more. Necessary? No. Better? Yes (I still don't like class D sound, the switching frequency is too low that it ruins the HF - I guessed going tech...

in my rack I have an old DIGN, then rebranded OrigenAE, which was the model most similar to a (bulky) CD player that I could find at the time.
I have been asked by a few people what model of CDP/DVDP was ;)

You may NOT have the space to hide the case. And that "bulky old style" is still in vogue among audiophiles.

Quiet fans > insulation (you can always buy panels and install them yourself). 3-4 case fans? Do you really need as many? this is a non-overclocked cpu in a modest sized case, the PSU fan, one intake and one exaust are plenty. You may not need to have them PWM or DC controlled if you use for instanc...

It should be A Windows 7 Machine . Not Linux or other what nots ! If you're just downloading things, why restrict yourself to Windows? Hey, you could even use FreeDOS for that if you wanted! I'm just saying that Windows is rather a waste of money for what otherwise can be a very cheap system. Unles...

If the backup needs to be done daily or even more often, then consider two drives in raid1 is a better option. I hope you are not suggesting Raid 1, as a backup plan... (Or I misunderstood) When you delete a file by accident on disk 1, it is also deleted on disk 2. Your "backup-Raid" is useless. I ...

No, you don't get the problem. Windows cannot scale the TEXT properly to such a high resolution. What im trying to do is avoid the scaling, and move into a screen that will have similar text as what i use now, but with more real state screen due to the 4k / 40''. I dont think it will work, I'm afra...

Yes, much longer. But IIRC on the 3TB model (and some smaller one perhaps) they don't park at all.

Those industrial PPC fans are wonderful (and black), but cost 30€/40$ each :D
I would like to see the redux ones tested, though.

The Corsair AF140 QE are also good, but not the best for rads.

The biggest issue with 4k, isnt gaming, but Windows. It has terrible scaling, you could use such PC only for gaming.
Hopefully win10 will fix this.

Anyway, my rig is completely inaudible at idle. Still extremely quiet during full load. Not to mention everything is overclocked. http://cdn.overclock.net/3/3a/900x900px-LL-3abedfa8_DSC_0155.jpeg No isolation needed. Keeping the fans quiet makes your rig quiet and still provide a lot of cooling. He...

Re: Quiet gaming setup

It seems a ground loop. Replace the socket where you connect its power plug until you find one that doesn't. In the worst case is related to the audio cables that goes into it and a fix may not be possible (short of DIY opening the speaker box), buying a different speaker set may be a better option.

I second this advice -why get an old chipset? and look at Gigabyte boards too, they are pretty good in mATX format.

This is an interesting challenge, one i never looked into.
Besides Kabini, check the new Haswell mobile chips and those compatible with more common microATX/ITX mainboards. The G3258 is a waste of power.

Do you have the case already? It will limit motherboard and PSU choice.

I feel it matters, but no idea of the recommended max temp. Not cramping the cages or putting a fan on the drives is the best we can do. I change my storage drives way before end of life, because even if they dont fail, they start to get compromised with bad sectors, and the likes. Sadly my "Not per...

I dont know their fans, but for a not too thick rad, my favourites 120mm fans are GT AP14 (15 are too loud) and corsair AP120 QE PWM (I believe that are quieter than then non PWM variant)
