Re: Replacing the 120mm fan on an Antec CP850 PSU: what work

A PM alerted me that I never updated this topic. I did end up going with the aforementioned Scythe Grand Flex SM1225GF12SH-P 120mm PWM fan, and I can report it is a complete success. As hoped the fan never spins up enough to make any discernible noise, so it's even quieter than the original fan was ...

Re: GTX 750Ti sips power

So, I never got around to modding a resistor into the fan wire of my Palit StormX Dual, mostly because I was a bit afraid to try it, but I still wasn't happy with the noise, particularly on idle. Lo and behold, there's another way to silence our cards: mod the bios. The result is that the fans are n...

Re: GTX 750Ti sips power

Now wondering what I'll do to it to get it quieter... AFAIK currently it's not possible (it's not possible for any Nvidia since the Kepler launch), but swapping the cooler. Yep. You could try a fan swap or an in-line resistor if the card uses a 2-pin (analog/voltage adjustment) fan. It does actuall...

Re: GTX 750Ti sips power

Bought the Palit 750 Ti Storm DualX a few days ago. The card is brilliant in every way except that it still "whooshes" at idle a lot more than I expected. The good news is that the fan spins at 30% at idle and only goes to 39% while furmarking (reaching 59 C in my rig), so there's a lot of headroom ...

Re: Replacing the 120mm fan on an Antec CP850 PSU: what work

That Gentle Typhoon is weird. Everything I can find about it suggests it's not PWM out of the box, but it can be modded to be PWM. So no idea if that shop is selling a modded one or if their info is incorrect. Either way, it has a lower airflow than the Grand Flex, even at a higher RPM. The Noiseblo...

Re: Replacing the 120mm fan on an Antec CP850 PSU: what work

That... looks like a really good recommendation, thanks. SPCR isn't too positive about them but there doesn't seem to be much that can go toe-to-toe with the 2400rpm PWM model.

Re: Replacing the 120mm fan on an Antec CP850 PSU: what work

No, I wasn't that satisfied with the original fan. I stripped all the Antec fans out of the case when I bought it and replaced them with Scythe fans which were much quieter. The PSU was vastly overpowered for the hardware I bought, which meant the fan wasn't really a problem (it never had to work ve...

Replacing the 120mm fan on an Antec CP850 PSU: what works?

Hello, About 4,5 years ago I bought a P183 case with a CP850 PSU, filled with a bunch of 120mm fans that are all pretty quiet at idle (mix of Scythe and Noctua). In the past year or so I've been noticing increased noise while idle (during gaming it doesn't stand out any more). I've traced the noise ...

Re: Finally a Super Quiet High-end Video Card?

Posting to say I got my wife a Sapphire 7850 (not the OC edition) a few days ago to replace a failed passive 4850. It's in an Antec P183, with loads of slow-spinning 120mm fans on a fan controller (usually all at 650 rpm). This means the computer is completely inaudible during the day and almost ina...

nikarul: Thanks, I didn't realise other fans could make that much difference.

RBBOT: Yeah, in certain MMO's (EVE Online in this case) it's quite normal to play with multiple accounts at the same time, to assist yourself so to speak.

Antec P183 or P193 for dual passive 4850?

Hello everyone, I'm going to build a new PC in a couple of weeks. It's meant to be a quiet (not silent) gaming (MMO's mostly) rig. Since I dislike voiding warranties and cutting/dremeling/etc stuff to make it fit I thought I'd go for two Gigabyte passive 4850 video cards, since that seems to be the ...

Haven't read the entire thread, but at glance I can see a lot of argument over why turbo wasn't enabled. To give a different perspective, I don't understand why enabling it is so important. Lawrence wrote that SPCR was trying to give an accurate clock-for-clock comparison against other cpus. To me ...

Oh, I should have been clearer! In stock form the 7950GT works perfectly already. I "only" had to unscrew half the case to change the cards. The stock cooler does blow a lot of warm air on the harddisk which might not be ideal but at least the PSU is keeping up. And it sounds as if I have an electri...

Quieting an AGP 7950GT?

Hi, I bought a Hush PC about 2 years ago which is a great (but horribly expensive) fanless pre-built computer. It came equipped with a Sapphire X800 Pro (AGP), with the fans removed and a single heat-pipe installed on it to guide the heat to the case. The X800 Pro has always been fast enough for my ...
