Re: ferrite chokes on monitor cables....an informal poll

I'm sorry if this is entirely off-topic (it is), but I initially read the title of this topic as "ferret chokes on monitor cables....an informal poll". I thought someone might be seeking medical or legal advice related to an accident involving their pet ferret and and a display device. It was only a...

Re: Piece chipped off hard drive PCB: RMA or not?

I agree. The last time I bought a hard drive I paid only about $60 for a 1.5 TB drive, so I personally would not want to mess around with a drive with missing components. My time and data are too valuable to worry about $60. Except that was probably before the Thailand floods gave drive manufacture...

Re: Lowest power consumption SSD

I would think that if a manufacturer were to care about the discrepancy between a reviewer's quoted power consumption figures and their own, they would let them know themselves. They're often providing the reviewers with test samples, after all, so it makes sense that they'd read the reviews and fol...

Surely, if you see that the Postville Intel SSDs quote a power consumption of 75mW idle/150mW active and you are measuring 0.6W, something must be wrong? . No, they never investigate. Re: R6450: too slow for Aero @ 1600 x 1200?

Say, your card doesn't happen to have a 32-bit memory bus does it? There are apparently some non-reference 6450s out there using a 32-bit interface, and people have reported performance issues with them. It looks like ASUS offers two silent 6450s, one with 1GB of 64-bit DDR3 memory, and another with...

Re: Seagate is dropping green line 5900rpm

Hard drive prices have really gotten out of hand. Upwards of $150 for 1TB drives that cost $50 a few weeks back? I wonder how much of this is price gouging to boost profits and drive long term prices back up though. In any case, industries need to learn that putting all factories for a component in ...

Re: Graphics card options - Older games

As was mentioned, installing a PCIe x16 card in an x4 slot should work, though you'll have to cut out the back of the slot for it to fit, unless it happens to use a full-size connector. Be careful not to damage anything though. : P There will be a performance hit, but it probably won't be noticeable...

Regardless, if you want fast, don't just look at the marketing and the rpms: you want a high-density drive. Today, that means you want a drive with 1T platters. There aren't a whole lot of them around yet and so far as I know they're all 7200 rpm. Apparently, Hitatchi is shipping their first 1TB pl...

But if extreme silence is one to go for the 6850 just be careful with your case temperatures if you want to go truly passive that thing is going to kick out a lot of heat. I don't know exactly what is overheating, but that's some pretty impressive bending. : ) It does seem like it might be a bit tight below the card though, potentially creating a pocket of warm air. I don't think the type of paste will likely make much more than a few degrees difference. If you're using too much though, it could significantly reduce heat transfer. It should just be a very thin layer, enough to fill in the imperfections between the two surfaces. Using the edge of an old credit c...

Yeah, I was just checking the Toms review, and the 6790 tested there wasn't looking very promising in terms of power consumption . Re: Sound Card: worth the money for me?

in short - there is no benefit in a fancy sound card when using digital output. I wouldn't say that's entirely true. The sound may be transfered as a digital signal, but in the case of games, a lot of sound processing can be performed by the card prior to getting sent to the speakers. Things like E...

As far as I know, the 640GB WD drives are still dual-platter. Re: Display shuts down mid-game

It does sound like something could be overheating. The IGP likely doesn't have a fan on it, so if air circulation isn't good enough in its vicinity, it could overheat after playing for a while. If the game pushes the CPU, the CPU cooler might be blowing warm air on the IGP's heat sink, which might a...

Here's a list , pick one with the outputs you need. That's kind of a small list though. Newegg surprisingly doesn't offer many options for DisplayPort on fanless cards. A 5750 is probably overkill for someone who doesn't do any 3D gaming, so that just leaves the one 4350 there. DisplayPort seems to...

One option that might improve your selection of cards would be to get one with HDMI and DVI rather than two DVI connections.
