I went with the Macbook. I'll report back when I get it. I have access to 15" and 17" Macbook Pros and I'll be able to make a good comparison.
I'm planning to swap the drive for a 320 gb WD Scorpion.

Macbook vs Macbook Pro noise
I'm about to bite the bullet. Which is noisier, Macbook or Macbook Pro? I'm wondering mostly about fan behavior and default fan operation because I might swap out the HDD for SDD anyway.

Thanks for the input. I have been looking at some posts about CF/usb flash and realize now there are a lot of hacks necessary to use it as a system disk. I'm sure this will change a lot over the next few years though. Right now I feel like CF/usb flash deserve 0 stars for practicality. (Linux isnt p...

3.5" vs 2.5" vs 1.8" vs SDD vs Flash
I see a lot of posts about 3.5" drives, 2.5" notebook drives, and a few about solid state drives. There are a few other quiet storage options that I don't see much mention of (and they're hard to search for), such as 1.8" ipod-size hdd, and the CF card-size hdd ... As well as flash memory options in...

Disable Dell SC420 CPU fan alert?
I just replaced the 92mm CPU fan in my Dell SC420 with a Nexus Real Silent. The original Delta fan in the Dell was connected to a special 5 pin header on the motherboard (but 4 pins are used). Of course, I can't connect the Nexus fan to that. When I boot, the computer reports a CPU fan warning and I...

This is really cool. Similar to what I did in college with a cardboard box and fullsize atx. I remember a similar electrical buzz , but it came from the power supply i think. This little rig is a proof that these utility pc's could be sold for 100 bucks. I always heard that regular flash memory can'...

i'm in the same boat, looking for a silent GPU and i play UT and UT3. i require ATI so it will work with my ATI HDTV wonder. I have been leaning toward the Asus X1600 silent PCI-e , either 256 m or 512 m. However - I am not too picky about the UT3 performance, or any newer game performance for that ...

Hi guys. I just registered here, but, I am not new to silent computing... Since my soph year at Iowa State I was setting up dangerous electrical hazards with fanless power supplies and computer components in open air cardboard rigs. I have shocked myself on power supply heatsinks countless times. Al...
