Thanks for all the useful comments. A fan is ok with me as long as it is reasonably quiet and don't spin up every 10 minutes. I have considered the Samsung netbooks, but unfortunately you can't buy them in Denmark with an SSD instead of an HDD. I suppose I could buy an SSD myself and replace the bul...

Want quiet netboook - how to navigate netbook jungle?

I am in the market for a netbook. My primary requirement is quiet operation. Next is price. Performance, battery life, keyboard configuration and screen size are not that important. I don't need much hard drive capacity. By quiet operation I both mean 1) low sound level in general and 2) no frequent...

Thanks for your informative post, plympton.

I think I will go for the 3450 - sounds like a nice card. How important is it if it is 256 or 512 MB?

I have a good feeling about the SOLO, so I will stick with that even though a 3480 may be able to solve my problem. I know that a Corsair VX450W is overkill for my power needs, and I would be happy to buy a lower rated PSU if it is just as silent. But from what I've read in the SPCR reviews, the VX4...

For a small low powered PC like yours, you should go with the Antec Solo. It'll be as quiet as the P182 with no fan in front, no fan on the Ninja, only the back fan to cool the CPU. Also, it comes with a good hard drive suspension system. It should like this : http://www.silentpcreview.com/article7...

Is P182 overkill for my needs?

I am about to build a new PC. My goal: as quiet as possible (surprise). In the PC I will fit: An Intel Core 2 Duo (E8200) CPU with Scythe Ninja cooler (preferrably passive) A motherboard with onboard graphics OR A motherboard without onboard graphics and ATI RADEON HD 3450 graphic card A single 3,5"...

I am building a new system and for graphics I am considering either an ASUS HD 2400 PRO, 256 MB or a Sapphire RADEON HD 3450, 512 MB (the latter only being a little more expensive). My primary concern is heat generation. Does anyone know how much more heat he 3450 generates than the 2400? How much m...

radeon hd3450 = exactly what you want. complete offloading of HD content to GPU, and support for big monitors (i think 2650x1600) Seems like something for me. But what about an Asus HD 2400 Pro instead? From what I have read in here it uses little power and I assume it will still be plenty powerful...

Motherboard: If you want to have onboard graphics, get one with G33 or G35 chipset. My personal choice would be Gigabyte GA-G33-DS3R or ASUS P5E-V HDMI with the latter being my favourite. Keep in mind that a quality PCIe card Like an ASUS Silent 8600GT is only roughly 30 watts extra and you can get...

Hi thejamppa and Stickem. Thank you both for your quick comments. For CPU I'd go new Wolfendale, E8200, E8400 or E8500. They're not that much more expensive and consume less power. Corsair VX 450W is solid choice. For HDD: Western Digital Caviar Green Power WD7500AACS or Samsung T-166 HD501LJ would ...

Feedback on parts for a new quiet PC

Hello SPCR folks, I am new to the forum but have read most of the recommended section, some of the product reviews and a lot of the sticky posts. I am about to build a new PC and I would like to make it as quiet as I can. I am going to use the PC for everyday work: mail, web, office applications plu...
