Everything is installed, I still have some problems with the DVD player but apart from that everything works great. I have some concerns regarding heat build-up though. I mounted a 800rpm slim Scythe fan on the cooler. I have timmed away the edges around the fan because of the narrow space between t...

More updates: Thanks to Noctua all questions about cooling are answered. They will send me an NH-C12P cooler . Thanks my Austrian friends! I will try to run this setup passivly, I can't fit the normal fan on the cooler due to space limitations. I hope that the psu exhaust fan located right next to t...

Thanks Rocketjeff! I'm quite pleased with how the painting turned out. The machine is not up and running yet, I´m still trying to source some hardware. I intend to equip it with a Corsair HX650 PSU, mATX mobo, i5 CPU and a Noctua top down cooler. I already have a Plextor slot in DVD and a Samsung 1...

The end caps are only for decorative use, I spoke to Scythe support and the said there was no harm in taking them of.
According to them this would make the cooler 2-3mm lower.

Why don't these things use Bluetooth instead of some proprietary RF system? Rather than messing with a different dongle for every device you'd just need one, or even none if your HTPC is a notebook/netbook with built-in Bluetooth. Bluetooth has been around long enough and is low-cost enough (thanks...

BTW, I'm very interested in comments on technical solutions and suggestions on how to make this rig quieter. I think I have eliminated structural resonance almost completly. The bottom plate and mobo tray are made of 3mm thick aluminium and the roof is constructed with two 2mm thick aluminium sheets...

I will propably add two external USB connectors, placing yet undecided.
All connectors on the mobo can be used if you route the cables down through the triangular opening on the computers top.
The plan is to have the monitor standing on the case so the cable won't have to go far.

Typewriter computer, project Facit.

This computer is not ready yet but I'll give you some pics anyhow. The computer case is made out of an old electrical typewriter from the mid-60's made by the Facit company. New bottom plate with rubber feets and anti-vibration grommets for outer case attachment: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2530/...

Thanks for the input, the Noctua cooler looks intresting. It seems that it would be possible to mount so that the fins runs parallel to the airflow. I have looked at the Shuriken but it seems less adequate in a passive setup. The fin grid looks rather closed at the sides and appears to depend heavil...

I saw some measurement that the total height from mobo to top of Minja was 122mm, wich happens to be the space I have from mobo tray to roof. The 5mm mobo stands and the thickness of the pcb makes it impossible. I have decoupled the computer interior from the outer case with anti vibration grommets,...

Passive low-profile CPU heatsink needed for custom case

I have transformed an old electrical typewriter into a computer (I've made my best to keep it silent to). The CPU will be placed next to the PSU fan so a passive heatsink makes good sense. I have for long planned to use a Ninja Mini but when the case is almost finished I realized that the space betw...

I will mount the HDDs onto a 3mm thick aluminium plate so the regular grommets are not an option. I will also use the ear grommets to mount the interior of my computer (where all the hardware are) in a "decoupled" way of the "shell". My hope is that the structural noises will fade away before reachi...
