As long as you undervolt the quad you can stay fairly quiet.

Definitely worked. My temps dropped from what I put in the OP to 45/75 with a higher overclock on the core and memory by 10 and 30MHz respectively.

I sawed off the VRM section of the original heatsink and screwed that on along with the Zalman memory sinks.

Thanks for the info, I'd just like to know if it's better before I go through all the work. Also, it seems the VF900 was a good upgrade as there's a retailer selling a 4850 with a VF900, how does the 7 compare to the 9?

Is a VF700 an upgrade over the stock 4850 cooler?

So I have a new 4850 in my computer that loads at 86C and idles at 62C. It also has a bad capacitor whine which I heard was based on luck? I have my old VF700 and I'm wondering if it's actually any better than stock. Of course that wouldn't cover the VRM so I was thinking of sawing off that section ...

I don't think you need to cover the ones on the back as those weren't covered when you bought the card. Try and cover the other three at the back of the card on the front side.
