Re: Prime95 - 4 instances for Quad Core? + How to use for m

Ciao Luca (that is also my nephew's name) Many thanks for the quick response. I have already downloaded it and I ran it for an hour this morning. It did seem to run all four cores so I did not think there was a problem. It was just after reading lots of forums about it that I wondered whether runnin...

Prime95 - 4 instances for Quad Core? + How to use for me?

Hi all I'm running some testing on my PC. I have read in several places that it is best to run four instances of Prime95 if you have a Quad Core. However, I am wondering if this advice is a thing of the past and whether the current P95 automatically tests all 4 cores in a single instance of the app....

Re: WB 2TB Black hard drive making a wavering humming sound.

my first assumption is the drive is hard-mounted (?), and thus causing the case to resonate somewhere. I have a PaQ case, which has lots of internal foam and stuff holding the components in place. I took the drive out yesterday and listened to it completely out of the case. It made the same sound. ...

WB 2TB Black hard drive making a wavering humming sound...

Hi all I've just installed a new to me (second hand) Western Digital drive, model: WD2002FAEX. I've read in reviews that these can be a little noisier than the average drive, but most of that refers to clicky read/write noises. I just wanted to make sure that the noise I am getting isn't indicative ...

Re: Does anyone use alternative to AMD Catalyst Software Sui

When Windows asks if it can connect to Windows Update, I have said No. The next screen asks whether I want ...

Re: XFX ATI HD5450 - Is DVI-DVI AND HDMI-DVI possible?

As far as Windows is concerned HDMI and DVI are the same. Windows will use what the monitor reports over DDC/EDID. As long as that is correct it will be fine. Windows will not do anything with the colourspace over HDMI unless the device says to. I've only seen a problem once with a cheap Acer monit...

Re: XFX ATI HD5450 - Is DVI-DVI AND HDMI-DVI possible?

It doesn't matter if you're using the monitor's DVI input or not. As long as you use the video card's HDMI output, the colorspace will be limited if(likely) windows/driver decides you've connected a a TV rather than a PC monitor. Are you saying that in response to me saying: The other problem (pixe...

Re: XFX ATI HD5450 - Is DVI-DVI AND HDMI-DVI possible?

Thanks washu. In the section I quoted, for LCD monitor it makes no mention of HDMI. So I started to worry that the HDMI output is "HDMI HDTV"s only and/or only for devices with an actual HDMI port. It is not mentioned in any other parts of that snippet. It's great news though that I am over worrying...

XFX ATI HD5450 - Is DVI-DVI AND HDMI-DVI possible?

Hi all I am about to replace my nVidia card with an HD5450. I have two 19" Dell Monitors (1907fpc) and predominently use them in extended desktop. Occasionally I use them in Clone mode. I always presumed that I could connect one monitor using a DVI-DVI cable, and the other one using a DVI-HDMI cable...

Re: Does anyone use alternative to AMD Catalyst Software Sui

OK, I can now get to the Display Settings, and I can now see how to change the dual monitor config to horizontal, vertical and extended desktop. But I cannot find an option for cloned displays (same on both monitors). From what little reading I have done so far, it would seem that this might not be ...

Re: Does anyone use alternative to AMD Catalyst Software Sui

Great! In that case, I think I will go through the procedure as per the link i posted above. Seems like CCC will offer nothing I need, so I don't see the point in installing it AND .NET Framework 4 if there's no reason to.

Thanks for all the help. :D

Re: Does anyone use alternative to AMD Catalyst Software Sui

Again, that's all amazingly helpful. I don't think I need CCC based on that. I might consider a third monitor one day, but that is WAY down the line (if ever). If I don't have to install CCC then I'd rather not, and as an added bonus I won't have to install NET.Framework either. I like to keep thing...

Does anyone use alternative to AMD Catalyst Software Suite?

Hi all I've always used nVidia up until now.... But I need to replace the GC in my Music PC and have an ATI (AMD) HD 5450 to put in. I've gone to the site for the latest drivers and have come across a big fat juicy c200MB download for AMD's Catalyst Software Suite. I've had a little look into altern...

Thanks for the helpful replies. Is there any software test or benchmark which could test the current state of my PSU? I'm not in a rush to replace. Should PSUs be replaced after so many years?

Hi there I built a PC in 2008 and used a Seasonic SS-400ET power supply. It is still working fine. However, I am changing a few bits in the PC and giving it a major clean at the same time. I wondered if anyone could tell me what the working life of this power supply is roughly likely to be? Does it ...

What to use for the inside of my PC external wooden box?

Hi all My PC is housed in a PaQ case which does a pretty good job of keeping the noise down. But it is not silent. Plus, I want to be able to move my PC when needed and I therefore want to add wheels to the bottom of it. So the plan is to make a box to slide the PC in to. There would be a top bottom...

Morning all. Glad I checked in here to see these replies. Did not expect to see them here after a month, so it was a pleasant surprise...! The PC is working fine and quietly since the clean up. No issues and no damage caused by using a brush and vacuum. I thought I might add a note about brushes... ...

As promised, I have looked over some old notes and emails.... They seem to confirm what i thought, although it is equally possible that I'm all confused and have been from the outset. The issue arose when I first built my PC. I had a 256MB GC to begin with. With that, Windows showed the available RA...

Yes. Either that or less likely, your memory. Can you confirm that your PSU is working? I can confirm that the PC boots and loads windows. So the PSU works well enough to do that...... Not sure how else I would test it. As for the RAM, I have two sticks installed.... So I tried booting with just on...
