Re: Fractal Design Define S Tower Case

With no 5.25" or front accessible 3.5" drive bays what do people do these days with all the USB headers in the mainboard? Only 2 USB ports and no card reader makes for exceedingly low connectivity, IMHO. Now we need USB hubs and external everything? At the time I bought my P183 I though the trend wo...

Re: GTX 650 Ti Reviews

I need 2GB of video memory, and I'm considering the gigabyte board. The Anandtech review concludes that it has a great cooler, but the fan curve is too aggressive. So, is it configurable? At least with MSI Afterburner or something like that?

Re: Energy efficient Sandy Bridge overclocking

I found this thread: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?259113-How-to-change-Multiples-in-windows-on-any-Intel-board And inside it, a reference to the RealTemp software: http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/2089/Real%20Temp%203.70.html With Real Temp I can easily disable the turbo, d...

Re: Energy efficient Sandy Bridge overclocking

Yes, but that means 7% less performance when I need, still more voltage than needed at idle (I probably can undervolt it further, but I haven't tested), and I would still want to lock it at an lower performance when I don't need the full speed. W/o reboots. But I may end up doing it if no better sol...

Energy efficient Sandy Bridge overclocking

I just got an Core i5 2500k on a Asus P8Z68-V, and oveclocked it to 4.5Ghz with a +0.075 vcore offset (could get more, but with too high temperature/noise and voltage). The problem is that this overvolt also extends to the idle voltage, that is now needlessly over 1.000V. And I also can't lock it @1...

Re: More HDD Consolidations

I don't see any imediate competition for HDD as storage medium. That's what Kodak said about their film business not too many years ago. Even if HDD's are around for awhile, it is a very low margin business. The future of the Desktop PC is already in jeopardy, and and even laptops are loosing marke...

Re: Fractal Design Define R3 ATX Tower

Nailed it. The features I want in a silent computer for my personal and professional use dictate that the case be the current size of the Mini pretty much. Anything smaller would require unwanted compromise Yes. The only compromises that I see is the maximum size of the motherboard being m-ATX and ...

Re: Fractal Design Define R3 ATX Tower

Besides being smaller, as you said, the mini will have (one?) removable HDD tray, USB 3.0 support, more space for cables behind the MB (I suppose, because it is wider), and will likely be somewhat cheaper than R3. Make it much smaller, it will start becoming cramped/less compatible. Also, the cutene...

Re: Fractal Design Define R3 ATX Tower

Nice! Have they improved their packaging/handling? Because one thing that I'm afrad is the number of people complaining that something is broken or bended in their Fractal cases. And almost all of them seem to be shipping damage, not assembly defects. I imagine they have to be extra carefull in this...

If I leave my computer idle, it ocasionaly jumps to high p-states and goes back. This is not desirable. The thing is, if something like firefox goes crazy at night and starts eating 100% cpu, it would not draw much energy if the voltage is set to 0.8v. Now I'm using flashblock, that is unbelivealy c...

I can't get the "lock p-state" to work. It only changes temporarily to that p-state, but will not lock at it. Clock Control is enabled. But I made an hackish work around that is working well, but I would rather not use it: http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/5723/padro.png http://img696.imageshack.us/i...

I wonder if 1.2V is the stock VCore for that PState? I suppose the way to test the PState voltages would be to over-clock in the BIOS setting VCore above normal as well as the multi. Then use software to limit the multiplier and see how the Vcore compares to what it is at stock BIOS settings. Anywa...

I don't know if I understood correctly this... If CnQ is enabled, it by default always reduces the vcore to 1.025V in idle, while dropping the multiplier to the minimum possible. The intermediary steps also remain as they were. The vcores are way too conservative, so even if you do an extreme overcl...

You need to use some other overclocking software, like AMD Overdrive. K10stat is the last thing you use/set. Take a look at my post in the underclock topic

My results are not as good as Lostfaith's 940 Black Edition, but for a cheaper cpu they look pretty good. For all the results, I ran 2~8 hours of OCCT (or 8 hours of Prime 95) at 0.0125 ~ 0.0250 volts under the ones I marked there. So they are rock-stable, 24/7 every day undervolts/overclocks for th...

Prime 95 (the new one that loads all the four cores) or OCCT. In both you can set the size of the data-set. Even small datasets seems to stress the CPU-NB, as it probably uses the L3 cache. But I think the ideal is to use large datasets (but I'm not sure).

My advice for undervolting (which I found on the web) is to incrementally drop the voltage down, and at each step run "Prime 95" torture test for a couple of days to ensure that it is stable. Once I found the stable voltage for my CPU, I bumped it up one notch just to be safe. It is much faster to ...

Thanks for mentioning the 4550 - that sounds like the perfect HTPC card, single slot passive <25W. And still faster for gaming than a 3650 - should keep a (very) casual gamer like me happy. It should not be faster than HD3650, as it has less shadders (80 vs 120) and smaller bus (64 vs 128) and run ...
