Wonder if anyone has tried making their own rubber grommets etc for the older Icepaks. I've had a 300GB VR for about 18 months now, it sits loose in the Icepack with the torx screws removed - it got rid of the annoying whine. Tried screwing it back in the other day - the whine came back immediately....

Apparently the Kingston version of this drive is no more - Intel stopped shipping them to Kingston, cutting them off. So anyone wanting a 40GB SSD, get the Intel one, unless you don't mind a possible inability to provide support by Kingston.

Saw that A-Tech mount as well - I would imagine that with a Velociraptor attached (my main interest) it would vibrate like hell and be no better than the ice pack. The Scythe at least is plastic which may have a slight dampening effect, and I run integrated video and have heaps of space around the s...

Scythe Slot Rafter

Has anyone tried one of these yet? http://www.scythe-usa.com/product/acc/064/slotrafter_detail.html Basically a plastic mount that slips into a vacant PCI slot, and screws to the case, allows for the mounting of up to 4 x 2.5" HDD/SSDs, plus an optional pair of 80mm fans. Now for SSDs they would be ...

There's a new drive as well: Western Digital Green 808GB WD8088AADS It's not in the list on the WD website, but searching for it found a page: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=613 I note that the AADS (<1TB) models have Read/Write|Idle specs of 6.0/3.7W, as opposed to the EADS mod...

I've had 4 EADS running in RAID 5 24/7 for quite a few months now... however if a HDD is going to fail I'm lead to believe it's either going to fail almost immediately (i.e. after a few days), or after a few years. Manufacturing defects show up pretty quick.

Re: Buying new WD 1TB driver

Should I buy it? Yes. The "problems" with WD green drives failing early is pure conjecture at this stage - they appear to be one of the most reliable drives around if you go by forums etc. Don't think I've seen a reported failure yet. As someone asked in another thread, a particular thread title on...

From the website... a 2GB version of the enterprise series of green drives: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=610 The cache has been boosted to 64MB, compared to the consumer 2TB green drive with "only" 32MB.
