Re: Thermal paste..

I was referring to an old Athlon with an exposed die. I slopped it all over an old Third as a little experiment and ran Prime95 for a few hours. :) AS works fine for that. One situation I know AS5 is disliked for is with extreme phase change cooling because its physical properties change for the wor...

Re: Thermal paste..

AS5 is not electrically conductive. Somehow their formula keeps the silver content from conducting. I spread some all over an old Athlon and its various surface mount caps and the bridges and it wasn't even unstable. If you measure its electrical resistance you will find that it's infinite (electric...

I think they dropped 2 cores because they can and because it maximizes whatever their yields are. It's not necessarily an indication of yields though.

I imagine a 6 core Xeon based on this will show up for lotta money.

Re: Which GTX560 Ti is the most quiet?

My MSI Twin Frozr II OC 560 Ti (what a name!) noise level greatly depends on the airflow around the card. In my small uATX box where the video card is upside down, has little air exchange, and is near the PSU - it gets LOUD. But in my big Coolermaster CM 690 with tons of airlfow but quietness due to...

Alternatively for an ultra low power seedbox you could grab a router that can run OpenWRT. OpenWRT has a number of torrent clients available. I use a Buffalo wzr-hp-g300nh as a router/switch/access point, seedbox, and NAS. It has one USB port and I have a 1TB drive attached to that. OpenWRT has a hd...

Re: 6950 fan never stops?

If you run dual monitor, which cranks idle clocks up a bit, the blower will even change speed frequently for cooling just with Windows Aero. This drove me crazy and made me find a replacement cooler. I did use Afterburner to set up a less aggressive RPM curve, but I couldn't go below 20%. The blower...

Re: Silent CPU cooler for socket A?

I have Thermalright SLK-700, SLK-800 and a Thermaltake Pipe 101. The Zalman flowers are excellent too as mentioned. Any of these coolers can quietly cool an Athlon XP though if overclocking is not part of the equation. Silent is tough though. Silent wasn't a niche back then really. But you can achie...

Re: Modern video card noise: good enough for SPCR?

It also depends on how much airflow your case has for the video card area. This can make a considerable difference on how much a card will spin up its fan(s). Also, the cards with aftermarket coolers often try to go for cooler temps than stock instead of similar temps and less noise. But I would def...

Re: Which cooler for a modded 6950?

Is that an original Accelero S1 or a Rev. 2? I'm planning on a cheap 6950 at stock clocks and I've been using my S1 on video cards for 4-5 years now. Just to make sure I'm reading your posts right, an Accelero S1 with a capable 120mm fan (like the Yate Loon D12SL-12 softmounted to my S1 now) can co...

Re: Which cooler for a modded 6950?

Well VRM temps in the 60s sound fine, so your hack is obviously working quite well. I'm not sure I'd be too keen on having to hack up the stock cooler myself though, and as you say the Trad2 is rather hard to find anywhere anyway. I just don't like taped on VRM heatsinks so that was my main motivat...

Re: Which cooler for a modded 6950?

It's a shame your card doesn't show VRM temps, as that seems to be the most problematic part of the card to keep cool. The GPU temps seem OK, but without testing with the card overclocked and Powertuned, it's impossible to know whether the cooler is up to the task. I'll certainly not try the S1 on ...

Re: Which cooler for a modded 6950?

FYI, the 3 temp sensors are all on the GPU die. VRMs are not measured. The temps are 3 different hot spots in the GPU. Is there any chance you could do some tests like m1st did, with OCCT, so that we can see what temps you get with an unlocked, 6970 clocked, +10-20% Powertuned 6950 and the TRad 2 GT...

The Thermalright TRad 2 GTX fits perfectly. It cools the card more than adequately even with those fans on 7v. It might be the same as this card:

In which case you have nothing to worry about because it has a separate VRM heatsink attached.

I was discouraged to use it on the 6950 since the manufacturer states that it's NOT compatible with the 6950, but you demonstrated the opposite! One question: are the TR fans 3 pins or PWM? They probably say it's incompatible because of VRM cooling. I'm not sure if the little heatsinks that t...

Re: Accelero S1 Rev.2 for HD6850/HD6870/5870

I tried 2x120mm fans on an S1. It is ok but part of each fan hangs off of each side so some airflow is wasted. A single, centered 120mm performs pretty much the same. I think the best setup might be 2x100mm because combined they should fit over the sink. Otherwise 2x92mm would be nice too. One usefu...

Re: Accelero S1 Rev.2 for HD6850/HD6870/5870

Yeah if you want dual fans then 90-100mm fans are best because they will both fit over the cooler. Two 120mms don't fit, but using just one 120mm is pretty good as well. It's worth trying to go fanless but watch your temps closely. The VRMs may very well overheat too without active cooling. I've fan...

Re: Accelero S1 Rev.2 for HD6850/HD6870/5870

I recently tried the S1 on my 6950, with a 120mm 800RPM fan attached. In games it kept the card quite cool, under 70C. But in Furmark it was questionable and one of the GPU Temp readouts broke 100C. The 6800 line is a smaller, cooler die and the S1 should have no problem with it as long as you use a...

I've found some thermal tape that I rely on. It's called Chomerics Thermattach, either T411 or T412. This stuff held the RAM and VRM heatsinks to my 8800GTX for 3 years. It never let go. The most important part of all thermal tape application is an initial heat + pressure application to help activat...

There are more options. How about the Zalman VF900 or VF700. The 900 series in particular would be much better than stock 5750 cooling. It should be more than adequate to keep a 5750 relatively quiet. http://www.zalman.com Alternatively, you could just buy a different video card with quieter cooling...

Re: Changing fan on the HD6950

I'm reporting in that the Thermalright T-Rad2 GTX fits 6950 perfectly. With the 2 included 92mm Thermalright fans at 7v, the card stays under 80C in Furmark and it is essentially inaudible (I can't hear it in my quiet case). This considerably outperforms the Accelero S1 with 800RPM 120mm attached. h...

Actually after doing some searching it looks like the DVI ports interfere with an Accelero S1 or Twin Turbo . Re: Silent Cooling for ATI Sapphire Radeon 5750

Accelero S1 Rev2. You probably won't even need to attach a fan. I've used it to cool both a 3870 and a 8800GT passively. You might want to grab some other thermal tape though because the stuff they use is questionable. The RAMsinks usually stick ok after application with heat and pressure but the VR...
