After thinking about my comments earlier, I'm having doubts about what I said. There probably isn't a controller onboard the fan. It just isn't practical to do that. Anybody know what kind of circuit is in the fan?

Well.... it's amazing what you can learn by simply reading the manual. My motherboard manual says that the CPU header (4-pin) is PWM or voltage controlled. I have it set up as PWM and it works great. The SYS header (also 4-pin) is voltage control only. The PWM pin is NC (not connected). Strange that...

Here's some of my assumptions on PWM fans: -PWM fans shouldn't stall out. The control circuitry onboard should restart the fan if it stalls. -PWM fans should be able to maintain a more steady speed. Theoretically, two fans of the same size and manufacture should run at exactly the same speed despite...

From reading the lm-sensors FAQ, it appears as if fancontrol writes to memory addresses on either the ISA bus or the SMBus (depending on what you have on your motherboard) directly to control the fan speed. It is my assumption that the BIOS will control the fans using this interface, but if you run ...

Thanks. I'll look into it a little more to see if it's something I'm just not setting correctly. lm-sensors works fine with everything else. I'm able to see the readings of my motherboard sensors, and the fan speeds are reported accurately as far as I can tell. It is also capable of controlling my C...

Voltage Control of System Fan in Linux?

Everywhere I have searched, the only solution I have found to control fans within linux is to use the lm-sensors package and fancontrol. My problem is that fancontrol appears to work only with PWM fan controllers, and the fan header for the system fan on my motherboard only supports voltage control....

No PWM on System Fan

Thanks Mike. You said that the Kill-A-Watt precision isn’t that high. Is there something better? I probably don’t need anything more than what I have, but it’s nice to know. So according to my numbers (accuracy of the Kill-A-Watt notwithstanding), my measured power dropped 6W when I took out o...

GA-MA74GM-S2 Idle Power Levels

I am putting together a machine to act as a NAS, a web server, and a general number cruncher. After reading the article on the GA-MA74GM-S2, I put together a similar machine: AMD Athlon X2 4850e GA-MA74GM-S2H Mushkin 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800 2 Western Digital 1TB drives (WD10EACS) PicoPSU-120 with 12V...
