For virtualization, you should select a CPU with HVM capabilities. At AMD they call it AMD-V or SVM. All Athlon XP AM2 and Phenom CPU have it. Semprons don't. Even a very cheap and efficient Athlon 4850e has it. At Intel, they call it VT. For Intel, it's more difficult to find a CPU with VT. If I re...

This week, I built a system with a GA-MA74GM-S2H. Power consumption is indeed low: 37W with a cheap 350 QTEC PSU, a 2'5 SATA harddrive and a 4850e underclocked at 1GHz at 1.0V. But the board does not boot with a bt848 PCI card plugged in the PCI2 slot. In the PCI1 slot, it boots but the SATA control...

AMD (who bought ATI) started to release the specs of its graphic chips and chipsets: AMD/ATI release register specifications; Novell follows with alpha driver and AMD to open up graphics specs . People are now working on open source drivers based on those specs, for example http://www.radeonhd.org ....

Right, the Asrock has no solid caps. If I understand it correctly, it means that the board risks to break earlier than boards with solid capacitors. It could also consume more power. To make matters worse, the A780FullDisplayPort seems to disappear from most online stores. Too old probably. The Asus...

Asrock A780FullDisplayPort vs GigaByte GA-MA78GM-S2H

In planning a new quiet system on a budget, there is the choice between two micro-ATX motherboards: * The Asrock A780FullDisplayPort is cheap (about 57 €) and includes a lot of features. Support of DisplayPort can become handy when compliant monitors become available. * The Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H ...
