Re: Small fun computer (for web surfing and nothing major)

A Sandy Bridge PC would be ridiculously overpowered for web browsing. If you really want to go down that road, best wait for a while as the price of an entry-level Sandy Bridge system should drop quite a bit in the coming months. Lol, perhaps it might even be as early as next month. :) There's alre...

Computers are no longer dull beige boxes used by people to do work on, they are sleek machines of entertainment, information, play, and sometimes work. Socket AM3+ or Socket FM1 ? http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/amd-llano-socket-fm1-sample,news-35350.html I am guessing that AMD will officially call the socket FM1 to avoid confusion with AM3 motherboards as obviously the socket is very different. Looking at the socket it is now obvious that AM3 CPU's...

I'd like to specify one thing -- Missing Remote review didn't specify whether 14.5W is AC or DC draw. If it were AC draw, it's too good to be true. Better than my notebook! :o From this , I'm inclined to think it's the former (AC). As mentioned in another SPCR article, Intel motherboards are partia...

The 120GB G2 is a value sweet-spot in the meantime. +1. Couldn't help but wish I bought more of them during Black Friday when they were going for $200 ($165 after MIR) a piece. I only bought two (the limit for the rebate) as I was expecting the G3 drives to arrive February. Now, we're already into ...

I've been using Intel X-25M (G2) in an Antec MX-25 enclosure for about a year now. Was using it connected via eSATAto my desktop and USB to my laptop. Have you looked at hard drive enclosures with USB and SATA connections? Alternatively, you could save money by getting just a SATA to USB adapter. That would adapt the bare drive to a USB interface without requiring disassembly to put the drive in your PC bay. Or, you could change out your hot swap...

It's about 20 cents in NY state. It used to be under 15 cents before "plateau oil" (or whatever happened in 2005). Re: How much increase can I expect on my electric bill?

Figure ~ $1/Watt/year for any device left on 24/7/365. So, if your PC uses 120W when folding, that's $10/month. If it's a laptop that draws 60W, then $5/mo. Of course, those estimates are for fairly low to mid-power PC's. If you're folding with a Core i7-980X and 3x GTX 580, I'd hate to see your po...

Core i3s really overclock like crazy. My 530 (2.93 stock clock) runs at 4.4 without even raising the voltage. I just upped the BCLK from 133 to 200 and that was that. You sure about that? Obviously Sandy Bridge is the prime target for the build. At the moment I expect to grab one of the Socket 1155 CPUs. I don't see much to gain in the 1356 or 2011 sockets as they will be far more power than I would normally use. Looking at the planned releases, the i7-2600S looks appealing due to i...

Unless you've got incredibly low ambient temperature, those core temps are normal. No idea why you'd think they're not. And yes, some cores tend to be warmer than others.

2) if you're going to leave it on all the time, an SDD is unnecessary in my opinion. The only time an SDD really makes up for the insane cost, is if you're going to be booting/shutting down often, media editing, or loading huge games into memory. Since you'll be doing none of those things, there's ...

IMHO, you should spring the $90 and get 64-bit win 7 if you're going to be using Photoshop (mostly to handle more RAM, but also because 32-bit is dying out). And I might be mis-remembering this, but I thought there was a way to use a 32-bit win 7 key to unlock a 64-bit version. The keys for 32-bit ...

The chipset also makes a huge difference. I'm not sure about the more recent versions, but it was almost impossible to find a mini-ITX board with the 945GSE mobile chipset a year ago. Everything had the 945GC chipset. I think the 945GSE had a TDP of ~2W, and the 945GC had a TDP of ~8W (which, I wil...
