Re: Fractal design 1000 & Arctic Cooling Alpine 64 Pro CPU

Last question. Found another motherboard. Yuk, that one's NASTY (IMO of course). Unless you can get it CHEAP or free, I wouldn't bother. Why is it NASTY? No DVI (but you're getting a card) only 2 RAM slots (fine, if that's all you'll ever need) measly 4 USB on back & NONE are 3.0 (your call) reduce...

Re: Fractal design 1000 & Arctic Cooling Alpine 64 Pro CPU

ASUS M5A78L-M board looks good...at least it has all solid, NO crappy/junk capacitors! Appears to be no option for case/front USB3 ports however, if that's an issue. FWIW: "future proof" is relative...are you planning to keep for 5+ years? Regarding an SSD upgrade...even utilizing what some feel is ...

Re: A replacement for my old silent PC

If you really want to start over, then consider building for maximum longevity...at least 5, better still 7, even 10 years. Then you will justify the serious investment. Now getting a new case and higher end components makes sense. Otherwise, saving that 200 (to me) is certainly worth it. Always goo...

Re: A replacement for my old silent PC

Why not keep it simple and reuse some of your already excellently chosen components? :) Like the SOLO case, Accelero & Ninja heatsinks. You'll need new fans, but at 5+ years that's a given anyway. Two 92mm in front, then strap a 92mm (or 120mm?) on the Accelero for hotter graphics card. Perhaps with...

Re: Upgrading my PC

I almost suggested this before: just get Newegg to refund you, then order directly from Crucial. After informing them of your plight, perhaps they would offer reduced, or even gratis express shipping. Even if you'll pay, it's $5.99/3 days--$8.99/2 days and might be quicker delivery at this point :D ...

Yikes! That's GOT to be disappointing! :( :( :( Doesn't appear like any VLP modules I've seen, either. Those are usually no taller than second (top) latch slot and even that is half size. Short a stick AND wrong type(?!) Likely a [whatever] point to you now :P So Newegg is shipping right after drive...

Well, I do wear rubber bottom shoes also :p Jokes on me if it don't make a difference! Kitchen floor isn't an option, since NO space to work; it's a SMALL one. I err on the side of caution when it comes to anti-static protection, which after many years hasn't failed me yet! Re: Upgrading my PC

With your new found RAM savings you could go back to the i5-3570K :O I've now seen several mentions of that one specifically for audio work... But it seems what may be popular is being 'unlocked' for overclocking. Plus higher series of HD Graphics, likely irrelevant with discrete card. Or just stick...

Re: Upgrading my PC

Unless you must buy from Newegg only, a 16GB Kit (8GB x2) direct from Crucial has LOWEST cost of $125.99 with FREE shipping. You really seem bent on getting heat spreader RAM. That's NOT really necessary...but if you want it. Lower voltage shouldn't matter either...maybe with (16) sticks in a server...

Re: Upgrading my PC

I'm pretty sure you DON'T need heat spreader RAM. Like CA_Steve mentioned: your bad experience with UNUSUALLY hot RAM has you needlessly concerned. Except for specific applications (FB-DIMM) heat spreaders are really as much bling vs. function, marketed to hard-core gamers & RAM overclockers. If you...

Processor UPDATE:

Core i5 3450 3.1GHz (3.5GHz Turbo) 77W
for low as $199.99 -- ANOTHER $20 saved!
or
Core i5 3450S (65W) costs $204.99

Found that option at End PC Noise

BTW:
They also like ASUS P8Z77-M (Pro)
Used in their $1,699(!!!) 2U MusicMaker™
so you should be quite happy with it :D

I'd questioned continuing in this and becoming another one of "too many cooks" but it's starting to go off the deep end. I'll guess Jason isn't interested in SPLITTING HAIRS. Re: Upgrading my PC

I've also read about how the Intel CPU dispatcher checks vendor ID string and when processor is not "GenuineIntel" it runs the slowest possible instruction set. Re: Upgrading my PC

Can you (others) really use, or even need dual-channel for RAM? Is the performance difference noticeable outside of real PRO computing? If budget is becoming tight, perhaps get single 8GB now, then later add second for 16GB. That still leaves two free slots for 32GB max. Regular, no heat spreader, 8...

Re: Advice on specs for a replacement quiet computer?

From everything I've read so far, more cores is just burning money for using Photoshop, at least today. Many even feel a dual-core processor is plenty and can save you MUCH $. Moving up, a faster 4-core will be better than a slower 6-core. Of course a future PS version will likely utilize ALL cores ...

Re: Advice on specs for a replacement quiet computer?

Regarding specs, I was curious if you chose the GA-890GPA-UD3H specifically for the potential of using two graphics cards. Besides appearing to be an overall excellent board, especially for the price (received both Dam Good & Value awards from HardwareCanucks) it could be overkill with no discrete g...

Re: Advice on specs for a replacement quiet computer?

I've thought about your situation and you should be very well served by the CPU and Board you've chosen. I'm waiting on architecture change from AMD myself (6 months+ away?) but I can live with my Intel Core 2 Duo & DDR2-800 for years. Smart choice on the RAM (though I only use Kingston personally) ...

Re: Advice on specs for a replacement quiet computer?

I read your earlier post and replied before it was lost. That was regarding your choice of Patriot SSD, which seem to have VERY POOR reliability. Good to see you've changed that! Unless you're building a system to last for YEARS (5+) you might consider a less expensive CPU and Board for the short te...
