So I finally got my VB8001. I am a little disappointed so far. The beefs I have with the board: 1. The fan is really loud. 2. The fan can not be controlled from software. 3. It is not possible to compile gcc under x86_64 gentoo linux. 4. The pins for the USB connectors are not standard. Anyway, I fi...

Thanks for the suggestions! The SG05 seems to be almost exactly what I am after! The PSU is overkill but the case looks as it could do the job. Half height cards are hard to find. I try to avoid those cases. The SG06 is probably something that I would have to wait for a bit too long. I'll probably g...

[mini-ITX] Case suggestions

I have been searching for a case that suits my needs for several days. Every case I have looked at, has some flaw according to my criteria. I am about to buy a VIA VB8001 mini-ITX board. On the board I am about to fit: 3,5" HDD (maybe another one later on). PCI-E gigabit NIC. A CD drive either inter...

Compucase 8K01

Does anyone here have any experienca with the Compucase 8K01BS case? It looks interesting for my needs, as I need a new mini-itx case. It comes with a 100 W PSU, "High efficient HEC psu HEC120SA-7FX". Is it any good? How efficient is the PSU, and how good is the ventilation in the case? Here is Comp...

Thanks for the extensive info!

Would it be possible to mod the case to fit a 3.5" disk?

I will probably order the case any day soon.

To me the size of the case is not so important. The bigger the case, the cooler it will be (less noise). At least it is not as big as a normal ATX case. I haven't found any information about the efficency of the PSU. My original plan was to get a PicoPSU, but with this case I would save some money i...

It looks like this case can be bought in Sweden now. At least some sites has it for order.

Anyone with a review of it? How good is the PSU?

The online store that I looked at has a section CPUs>Socket AM2, CPUs>Socket AM2+. Under AM2 there are "AMD Athlon 64 X2" and "AMD Sempron Dual Core 2300+". Under AM2+ there are "AMD Athlon X2 7750 Black Edition 2,7GHz / 3MB / 1,8GHz HT Socket AM2+ (Boxed)" and "AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition 3,...

Thanks for the answers! I didn't know that the Athlons had the memory controller in the CPU... I have three sticks of RAM in the computer. I tried them all alone in different slots. I have one stick of RAM that I could test with, which is currently in an other machine. But I doubt that there will be...

Where do I go from here?

My main system half broke down. I noticed that it hangs every now and then. So I ran memtest86 on it. Memtest gives loads of errors after running only a few seconds. I have tested different sticks of RAM in different slots to no avail. Seems as if the mainboard is faulty, or maybe the CPU. The CPU i...

Thanks Rapido! I have still not decided which parst to use for my new rig. I got a little distracted by other things. Still the VB8001 seems to be the route to go. I have heard another VIA board, which was quite noisy. So I will probably have to do something about the fan too, since I plan to make a...

Yes I agree with you that power management will do a difference. But according to the review the idle power draw is 35W. I assume that this figure is after the power management has taken tha speed down. My P3 1GHz idles at 28W. I want the new system to be less than that just to justify the buy (even...

I have a plan to use it for the exact same tasks. It is just that I think that the processor speed is a little overkill. I would like to lower the speed, which would make it possible to lower the voltages probably.

Thanks for the info.

Nice, thanks for the info.

How is the bios? Are you able to adjust voltages and speed there?

How much noise does the fan make?
Is the fan speed adjustable with speedfan or in the bios?

How hot does it get if you let it idle and turn off the fan with speedfan?

How do you like the board so far?

Could you post the total amount of power that you rig draws, if you have the possibility? I am very interested in that kind of numbers :)

VIA VB8001 Mini-ITX Board (undervoltable?)

I am looking for a low power pc, that is going to be a firewall, torrent downloader among many other things. I am in the same situation. At the moment I have a P3 1GHz/512MB RAM machine running gentoo linux. I use it as a firewall, torrent downloader and mp3-streamer. I have come to the conclusion that I want to upgrade it to be more quiet and have Gb LAN. At the same time it has to be extremely low power ...
