Re: Is SPCR Dead?

In some ways it's kind of strange given the number of PC hardware products on the market today that are designed for silence. Look at how many more cases there are that at least acknowledge trying to be quiet. The number of "quiet" fans and heatsinks has exploded and graphics cards that have fans th...

Re: New i7 and R9 280x build

So I am now considering some other options for the case and I keep changing my mind on which would be best. Cases I am considering are. Corsair 330r carbide Antec p100 Antec p280 Fractal Design Define R4 Antec solo II Out of all of these I would say the solo II is maybe sort of the wild card as it h...

Re: New i7 and R9 280x build

well in that case I think I'll go with an aftermarket cooler like that one and just put the GPU in a lower PCIe slot. As for the X79 choice it is partly because this will also be a work machine doing lots of 3d rendering as well as some metal casting modeling software which will take advantage of as...

automatic spin-up and spin-down of eSATA

I was wondering if there is a way to spin up an eSATA drive only when needed. Ideally this would be automatic when the drive is trying to be accessed.

Re: WD 6400aaks problem

you could try freezing it to be able to use it for a few minutes to get the data off. Remember to put it in a freezer bag and the longer you freeze it the more time you will have to get data off. Haven't actually used this technique but heard it works.

hope this helps.

Re: Quietest Automatic backup solution

Does anyone know how i might set up an esata drive to not turn on at startup, only spin up when needed, and then spin down after a set amount of time? I know i can set hard drive spin downs under windows power management settings. However that is a setting for all hard drives not an individual drive...

Re: Quietest Automatic backup solution

I do not want to use an old computer as it would consume allot of power.

I am not completely clear on whether spinning down hard drives in an external enclosure while connected is possible if so that is what i would like to do. This would be ideal with a WD 1TB green drive.

Re: Quietest Automatic backup solution

-settle for something that's not a true backup: SPCR's storage reviews have tables with hard drive measurements, choose a low-power hard drive and a fanless enclosure whose controller spins down idle drives This is what i was thinking of not sure what you mean by "true backup". -backup over the net...

Quietest Automatic backup solution

I recently built a nice quiet pc and now need a quiet/silent way of backing it up. I would like to use some sort of external drive with as fast a connection as possible (I have both usb 3.0 and esata on my computer). I would be using some sort of automatic backup method that would backup a few times...

You mention the gpu temps droping after removing the baffle, are you referring to the plexi one around the cpu? The baffle which i am reffering to is not pictured it is the one that frenchie and some others recomended above. It is a piece of plexi positioned vertically underneath the GPU cooler at ...

It is actually quite disappointing after further experimentation I realized that I can drop my graphics card temps by about 9 degrees C if i remove the baffle I guess there...

I have finally figured out what is caussing my fan not to report RPM signals. When I set the fan to 100-65% it gives a RPM reading however anything below this delivers no RPM signal and at these speeds it is far too loud. The other thing i noticed is the fan is making an audible ticking that was not...

I attatched a 12cm fan to my graphisc card cooler in place of the 92mm and am running off of the auto PWM control of the card this means that at idle it is at 32% and at load it ramps up to 45% because despite attempts to get an RPM signal off the fan i was unable to. However because it is PWM contr...

Ya I don't have quite the extreme modding skills you do or the courage to tear into such a nice shinny case (although when done well the result is even shinier). I thought the same thing about the graphics card i was hoping for improved performance with the HR-03 vs stock cooling but the result, alt...

re the second fan -- there's no reason it has to be identical . You could just get a Slipstream (or any slow quiet fan) and roughly match the speeds of the two fans by ear or rpm monitoring on the mobo. A simple voltage conotrller would work fine, as would speedfan on many boards. This would be fai...

I was thinking that. From what I've read the stock fan is basically a slipstream 1200rpm (at the least in noise/performance). I may use that extra fan if I get a second card for OpenGL (ATI Firestream) or for the PSU fan swap if the stock turns out to be too loud. The stock fan is different than a ...

This technology has been demonstrated in a device called a Ionocraft or a lifter and when multiple electrodes are used you can indeed have a less "localized" air flow like in an Ionocraft. One problem with ionic cooling is that it requires high voltage electricity to power it and not the standard 5 ...

Scythe Mugen 2 CPU cooler w/1200RPM slipstream I would recomend just using the PWM fan that comes with the Mugen 2 I have used it and it will run as slow as ~250-1200 RPM and can run at much slower speeds than a normal 1200 RPM slipstream and it is PWM controlled so you don't have to worry about fa...
