I see, my "old" DFI RS482 isn't that way, and some new boards as well. Interesting, the Sapphire cooler allows to fit low-profile cards in the PCIe slot if it's over the card. Anyways, I think waiting for RV770-based cards would be a good thing at the moment. There are probably going to be a few pas...

If size isn't an important factor, is the picoPSU at least able to solve this : On one of my old (and heavy) systems, I installed an FSP Zen 300W, and it won't start unless I connect many fans to it since the system doesn't require enough power on the 12V rail. Once the system has started, if I disc...

Many power bricks probably aren't that efficient...

You've probably only saved on fan power ;-)

There are a few passive HD4670 out there. http://www.sapphiretech.com/us/products/products_overview.php?gpid=280&grp=3 http://www.hisdigital.com/us/product2-412.shtml HIS's version has 1G RAM running much faster than the Sapphire card. They're both dual-slot, but the cooler is on the top of the card...

(all motherboards come with only 4 memory slots...)
Server boards with 8 and 16 slots are easy to come by. You can get 128GB RAM with some of them.

If the density is the same for a 5400 and 7200 RPM drive, the 7200 RPM drive still cover 33% more surface in the same time period with the faster rotational speed.

Depending on your budget, the VelociRaptor with the cooler/noise maker removed (which was reviewed here) could make sense.

Take note that it's very important what kind of tape you use, because if the tape starts disintegrating it will be a major PITA. I guess it should be something designed for high temperatures. Panels run cool, so high temp tape isn't absolutely necessary. I'd worry about HV though. If the frame is t...

I tried to fix coil whine from my old motherboard. I first tried with hot glue. Didn't work. Then I tried super glue. It worked a few days. But then the whine came back. Epoxy is what you should use normally. Super glue breaks easily on materials it doesn't stick well to (lacquered cooper for insta...

Can I expect any of the AMD or Intel systems above to draw less power than the third option with the same PSU? I'd expect the Sempron with an AMD 7xx chipset to have low power usage. But seriously, with a TDP of 20W for the P3 800MHz, only a mobile or VIA processor could match on power usage. IMO, ...

Welcome to SPCR! Thanks! Well, a CCFL inverter's frequency is 25kHz or more, and the bulb itself doesn't really whine from what I've seen. I replaced the CCFL in my laptop, and the inverter board makes LOADS of ~450Hz whine when bulb brightness isn't set to 100%, which points to the dimming PWM. Wh...

Are LED backlights quieter?

Noise coming from LCD monitors is often caused by the backlight inverter being PWM-controlled.

Has anyone noticed if LED-backlit monitors are quieter? Yeah, I know, there's no 500V inverter, but LEDs are also PWM-controlled.
